To the Purchaser
Your new mower was carefully designed and man-
ufactured to give years of dependable service. To
keep it running efficiently, read the
instructions in this oper- ator s manual. Each
section is clearly identified so you can easily
find the information you need - whether it is
operation, lubrication, or service. Read the
Table of Contents to learn where each section is
located. Use the Alphabetical Index for fast
reference. This safety alert symbol identifies
imgortant safety messages in this manual. When
you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility
of personal injury and carefully read the message
that follows. Right-hand and tell-hand" sides
of the machine are determined by facing in the
direction the mower will travel when in use.
Because John Deere sells its products
world-wide, U.S. units of measure are shown with
their respective Metric equivalents throughout
this operator's manual. These equivalents are the
SI (International System) Units of
Measure. Record your mower serial number in the
space provided on page 11. Your dealer needs this
infor- mation to give you prompt, efficient
service when you order parts. If your mower req
uire s re placement parts, go to your John Deere
dealer where you can obtain Genuine John Deere
partsaccept no substit- utes. The warranty on
this mower appears on your copy of the purchase
order which you should have re- ceived from your
dealer when you purchased the mower.

Safety Suggestions
Clothing worn by the mower operator should be fa
irly tight and bet ted. Loose jackets , shirts,
or sleeves should never be worn because of the
danger of getting into moving parts. Be
especially careful when operating on hillsides.
The tractor may tip sideways if it strikes a
hole, ditch, or other irregularity. Keep hands,
feet, and clothing away from moving parts. Do
not transport at high speeds, especially when
traveling over rough fields or roads. Always
have safety shields in place while
operat- ing. Before working underneath mower,
place blocks under each end of frame to prevent
accidental lower- ing of machine. Disengage power
and make sure all moving parts have stopped
before servicing machine. Never clean, oil, or
adjust the mower when it is in motion. Always
lower 3-point hitch when shutting tractor
off. When transporting the mower on a road or
high- way at night or during the day, use
accessory lights and devices for adequate warning
to the operators of other vehicles. In this
regard, check local govern- mental regulations.
Various safety lights and devices are available
from your John Deere dealer. Be alert the life
you save could be your own.
  • The safety of the operator was one of the prime
considerations in the minds of John
  • Deere engineers when this mower was designed.
Shielding, simple adjustments, and other safety
fea- tures were built into the mower wherever
    possible.
  • You can make your farm a safer place to live and
work if you observe the safety suggestions given.
Study these suggestions carefully and insist they
be followed by those working with you and for
    you.
  • All machinery should be operated only by respon-
sible persons who have been delegated to do so.
  • Before servicing or adjusting the mower, or
remov- ing material from it, always
  • disengage all power,
  • shut off tractor engine, and then

Operation

The 25A Flail Mower may be operated with a John
Deere tractor equipped with a category , 3-point
hitch without adapters or any other tractor with
a similar 3-point hitch that conforms to ASAE
stan-
  • Your 25A Flail Mower has many uses, such as
clipping pastures, trimming fence rows, mowing
large yards, cutting highway rights-of-way, and
maintaining airports, golf courses, parks, etc.
  • Your mower can be used on John Deere wheel
tractors and other tractors having a category 1
or 2 3-point hitch that conforms to ASAE
standards. The mower must have the proper gear
case to match tractor PTO speed of 540 rpm, but
it cannot be oper- ated on tractors equipped with
    external powershaft speed changers.
  • The mower is easy to operate. The only adjust-
ment required for satisfactory operation is the
cutting height of the knives. The cutting height
can be varied from one-half to five inches (13 to
127 mm) above the gro und with the gauge roller
    contacting the ground.
  • BEFORE OPERATION
  • CAUTION Before starting the mower,
  • check the hookup universal joint through the
complete lifting range of the hydraulic system to
be sure there is no binding, bottoming, or un-
    coupling of the joint.
  • Check oil in gear case. See page 7.
  • Lubricate the mower as instructed in lubrication
    chart on page 7.
  • Make a thorough inspection for loose hardware and
worn parts. Refer to torque chart on page 9 when
    tightening bolts.
  • IMPORTANT To increase the lite of PTO shaft and
co mponent parts, dis engage tra cto r PTO shaft
before raising mower to maximum position.
  • ATTACHING MOWER TO TRACTOR
  • Preparing Tractor
  • Refer to your tractor operator's manual for com-
    plete instructions governing rear-mounted
integral equipment and proper tractor tire
    inflation.

dards.
When the mower is used on a John Deere tractor
equipped with category 2, 3-point hitch, or any
other tractor with a similar 3-point hitch that
conforms to ASAE standards, a hitch adapting
bundle will be re- quired. This bundle consists
of a ball and spacer to be placed on the center
hitch pin, and a sleeve for each lower hitch
point. Set the tractor drawbar in the shortest
position, or remove it. On tractors equipped with
drawbar exten- sion, remove the extension. On
tractors having load-and-depth control that can
be locked out, lock out the control so it will
not function. On tractors with adjustable draft
links, set them in a normal retracted
position. Attach the center link of the tractor
3-point hitch to the top hole in the load control
yoke or yoke exten- sion.
