Introduction

Read this manual carefully to learn how to
operate and service your machine correctly.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury
or equipment damage.
Warranty is on the warranty certificate which you
should have received from your dealer.
Write product identification numbers in the
Specifications section. Accurately record all the
numbers to help in tracing the machine should it
be stolen. Your dealer also needs these numbers
when you order parts. If this manual is kept on
the machine, also file the identification numbers
in a secure place off the machine.
This manual should be considered a permanent part
of your machine and should remain with the
machine when you sell it.
Measurements in this manual are U.S. customary
units and their metric equivalents.
Right-hand and left-hand sides of the implement
are determined by facing the direction the
implement will travel when going forward.

LEARN MACHINE SAFETY Carefully read this manual.
Learn how to operate the machine and how to use
the controls properly. Do not let anyone operate
this machine without proper instruction. Unauthor
ized modifications to the machine may impair the
function and/or safety and affect machine
life. O53,READ2 -19-08JUL85

PROTECT PEOPLE AND ANIMALS Never allow anyone to
walk or work under a raised loader. Be sure that
people, livestock, or pets are not standing near
the machine while operating. Do not use the
loader for a work platform. Do not lift or carry
anyone on loader or in bucket or
attachment. WX158,OM,A -19-28MAR89
-UN-05OCT88
W14235
OPERATE CONTROLS SAFELY Become familiar with
controls. Be sure anyone operating the loader is
aware of safe operation and potential
hazards. Operate loader from operator's seat
only. Remain at controls until operating cycle is
complete. Stop loader gradually when lowering or
lifting loads. To help prevent loss of control,
do not use FLOAT position to lower
loader. WX158,OM,B -19-21MAR89

OPERATE LOADER SAFELY Improper use of loader can
cause serious injury or death. Use particular
care when working on inclines and
hillsides. Avoid holes, ditches, and
obstructions which may cause tractor/loader to
tip. Allow for additional length of loader on
tractor while turning. WX158,OM,C -19-21MAR8

-UN-06OCT88
W11378
CARRY MATERIALS SAFELY Do not exceed lift
capacity of loader. Carry load low at all
times. Avoid handling loose or shiftable
loads. Reduce tractor ground speed when
traveling over rough ground or when making
turns. Drive slowly through gates and doors.

WX158,OM,D -19-21MAR89
USE ROLL-OVER PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE (ROPS) To help
prevent personal injury or death caused by
tractor roll-over, be sure tractor is equipped
with roll-over protective structure (ROPS) and
use approved seat belt. In addition, add rear
ballast recommended.

HELP PREVENT ROLL-OVERS Do not use tractor with
Roll-O-Matic front end, single, or double front
wheels. Use recommended rear ballast for
stability. Use widest rear wheel tread setting
to maximize stability. WX158,OM,F -19-21MAR89

AVOID POWER LINES Serious injury or death can
result from contact with electric lines. Use care
to avoid contact with electric line when moving
or operating the loader. Beware of lift
clearance when raising loader to maximum
height. WX158,OM,G -19-28MAR89

HANDLE ROUND BALES SAFELY To help prevent
personal injury, do not handle round bales
without approved John Deere Round Bale Handling
attachments. Improper use of loaders to handle
round bales can result in serious injury or death
to the tractor/loader operator. This could be
caused by the bale rolling back down the loader
into the operator's station. To attain optimum
stability and visibility do not handle bales
that exceed the bale weight limitations of the
loader carry the bale slowly and as low as
possible to the ground operate the loader
controls smoothly, avoiding jerky
operation when handling round bales on a slope,
always approach the bale with the tractor facing
uphill never use the tractor/loader to stop a
rolling bale WX158,OM,I -19-21MAR89

HANDLING ROUND BALES WITH BALE FORK Handling
round bales can be hazardous, always use proper
equipment. Follow the instructions in the
OPERATING THE LOADER section of this manual.
Also, read the decals attached to both the loader
and the round bale fork. DO NOT handle round
bales with a loader unless the specially designed
John Deere round bale fork is installed. Without
the fork, the bale can fall on the operator when
the loader is raised. To help prevent handling
and stability problems DO NOT exceed the

AVOID HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDS Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure
before disconnecting hydraulic or other lines.
Tighten all connections before applying
pressure. Search for leaks with a piece of
cardboard. Protect hands and body from high
pressure fluids. If an accident occurs, see a
doctor immediately. Any fluid injected into the
skin must be surgically removed within a few
hours or gangrene may result. Doctors unfamiliar
with this type of injury may call the Deere
Company Medical Department in Moline, Illinois,
or other knowledgeable medical source. O5

PRACTICE SAFE MAINTENANCE Understand service
procedure before doing work. Keep area clean and
dry. Never lubricate or service machine while it
is moving. Keep hands, feet, and clothing from
power-driven parts. Disengage all power and
operate controls to relieve pressure. Lower
equipment to the ground. Stop the engine. Remove
the key. Allow machine to cool. Securely support
any machine elements that must be raised for
service work. Keep all parts in good condition
and properly installed. Fix damage immediately.
Replace worn or broken parts. Remove any buildup
of grease, oil, or debris. Disconnect battery
