THE TRACTOR G Know the controls and how to stop
quickly. READ THIS OPEI ATOP'S MANUAL and
instructions furnished with at- tachments. G Do
not modify or alter or permit anyone else to
modify or alter this tractor or any of its
components or any tractor function. O Do not
allow children to operate the vehicle. Do not
allow adults fo operate it without proper
instruction. G Do not carry passengers. Do not
mow when children and others are around. There is
no safe place for extra riders. O Keep all
shields in place. G Replace safety and warning
decals when they become illegible. FUEL USAGE
SAfiET O Handle gasoline with care.It is highly
flammable. Only use approved gasoline
container. G Do not attempt tofill gas tank
fromfuelcontainer unless the containerspoutorfunne
ifitsinsidethe fuel tankfilterneck.Ie use of too
large a spout or funnel. or no funnel. may result
in spilled gasoline. creating highly flammable
gas vapors. This could result in fire and/or
explosion, causing severe bodily injury. G Never
take the cap off or refuel when the engine is
running or hot. O Don'f smoke while refueling or
anywhere near fuel. O Do not store. spill or use
gasoline near an open flame. G When filling the
tank. maintain control of the nozzle. e Don'f
fill Mel tank to capcicity...allow ream for
expansion. G Wipe up any spills immediately. O
Always tighten the fuel tank cap securely. O If
the original equipment fuel tank cap is lost.
always re- place it with an approved cap. A
will-fit cap may not be safe. O Don'f drive
equipment near open fire. G Never use gasoline
for cleaning parts.

    air clean. or cover directly over carburetor air

TRACTOR OPERATION G Disengage all power to
attachments).fully depress brake- clutch pedal
and shift into neutral before attempting to sfart
the engine. G Only use jumper cables in
recommended manner as outlined in Operators
Manual. G Do not bypass the safety interlock
system. Consult your Dealer if your safety
controls malfunction. O Reduce speed and exercise
extreme caution on slopes and in sharp turns to
prevenf tipping or loss of ccnfrol. Be especially
caufious when changing direction on slopes.

  • MOWER OPERATION
  • G Clear the work area of objects which might be
    picked up and thrown.
  • O When using the vehicle with mower, proceecl as
    follows
  • Mow only in doyligh or in good artifical light.
  • Never make a cutting height adjustment while the
    engine is running if the operator must dismount
    to do so.
  • Check the blade mounting bolts for proper
    tightness at
  • frequent intervals.
  • cl Shut the engine off when removing the grass
    catcher or unclogging chute.
  • O Watch for holes. rocks and roots in theterrain
    andother hid- den hazards. Keep away from
    drop-offs.
  • O Do no stoporstart suddenly when going uphill
    or downhill. Mow up and down the face of steep
    slopes never across the face.
  • O Disengage power to mower before backing up. Do
    not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary
    and fhen only after careful observation of the
    entire area behind the mower.

O Keep open flame away from battery cr cold
weather start- ing aids to prevent fires or
explosions. G Disengage power to ottachment(s).
stop the engine, dis- connect spark plug

making any repairs or adjustments. G Do not
lubricate or make mechanical adjustments
while the unit is in motion or when the engine is
running. However, if minor engine adjustments
must be made. set the parking brake. securely
block the wheels and use extreme caution. It is
necessary to adjust the carburetor with the
engine run- ning, take extra care not to allow
rings. wristwatches, cloth- ing, efc. to Decome
entangled with moving ports. Do nof strike
flywheel with a hard object or metal tool as
this may cause flywheel to shatter in operation,
causing per- sonal injury or properly damage. Do
not change the engine governor setting or
over-speed the engine. To reduce fire hazard.
keep the engine free of grass, leaves, or
excessive grease. Do not clean while engine is
running. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to
be sure the equip- ment is in safe working
condition. Never store equipment with gasoiine in
the tank inside a building where fumes may reach
an open flame or spark. Allow the engine fo cool
before storing in any enclosure. Keep the machine
and supply of gasoline in locked storage fo
prevent children orofheis from playing or
tampering with them. When machine is to be stored
for an extended time. disconnect battery cables
or remove the Jaffery. Under normal usage the
grass catcher Dog material is sub- ject to
deterioration and wear. Check bog frequently for
cleterioration and wear and replacewom bags.Check
that replacement bogs comply with the original
manufacturers recommendations or specifications.
SERVICING, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE O Ie vehicle
and attachments should be stopped and in-
spectedfordamage offersfriking a foreign object
and the damage should be repaired before
restarting and operat- ing the equipment. O
Keepthevehicleandattachmentsingoodoperatingcon-
dition and keep safety devices in place and in
working condition.

O Periodically maintain mower. Tighten nuts.
bolts and fit- tings periodically and lubricate
mower for proper and safe operation. Check blade
for tightness.
Set parking brake and stop engine before leaving
seat.
O Store gasoline safely. Store gasoline in an
approved tightly sealed container. f2efuel
outdoors and only with engine stopped. Do not
spill gasoline on a hot engine.
Be sure lawn is clean. f?emove stones.wires.
sticks, toysany- thing that might catch or be
thrown by the rncx'er blade.
O Do not operate mower in a confined area.
Exhaust fumes are dangerous. Only run engine out
of doois.
Do not wear loose fitting clothing that might get
caught in moving parts. Also, keep hands and feet
away from mov- ing ports.
O Disengage all clutches and place gear shifi in
neutral before attempting to start engine. O The
discharge guard must be down at all times during
mowing operation.

to prevent accidental starting.

operate your tractor. It is for your sofety thot
you know where all controls are. and are familiar

GEAR SHIFT LEVER This lever controls the ground
speed (5 speeds forward and 1 reverse). The
tractor was designed to start out in any gear.
The geoi should De chosen to suit the terrain and
the needs of thE attachment being used. Change
gears only with unit at full stop end Drake
clutch pedal fully depressed IMPORTANT To avoid
damaging transmission, never shift
ir mofion. Always place ear shift lever in
neutral N before starting engine (Fig. 2.1A).
BRAKE CLUTCH PEDAL Depressing this brake clutch
pedal applies the brake and at the same fime
disengages the drive. 7o operate Depress brake
clutch pedal fully for slotting, braking and
changing gears. f2emove foot slowly anc com-
pletely from brake clutch pedal to engage
drive. NOTE The brake clutch pedal must be
completely dep- ressed, and the P.T.O. must be
in the OFF position, before fhe engine can be
starfed.
Fully depress brake clutch pedal, and then move
shift lever tc the desired gear position(1 or 5
for progressively faster for varc movement, f2
for reverse). Slowly release Drake clutch pedal
tc initiate tractor movement.

CHOKE CONTROL 1is control aids in starting a oold
engine.
IGNITION SfITCH Forsofetypurposesa key1ype
ignition switch isutilizedforstart- ing and
instantly stopping the engine.
For cold engine starting pull knob outward. As
the engine harms, push in. Choke is no required
for restarting a warm engine. ENGINE SPEED
CONTROL This control regulates the engine speed
from SLOW (idle) to FAST(maximum operating power
and speed). When starting engine. set control to
a mid-range position. As engine warms up.
gradually move control to maximum FAST position.
TO STAI T Turn and hold keY at STAf2T position
until engine is running fhen release key. Turn
key fo OFF position to stop engine. SEAT ADJUSTER
HANDLE TO ADJUST Sitintractorseotmoveseotadjuste
r handle to the side to release lock, then slide
seat forward or backward to desired position.
Release handle to secure adjusfmenf.
NOTE AlwaysusemoximumFAST positionwhena11achments
ore Deing used. To idle, set control in SLOW
position. P.T.O. POWER TAKE-OFh SWITCH 1is
switch controls fhe drive to engine powered
attachments. NOTE The P.T.O. must be in the OFF
position and brake clutch pedal musf be
completely depressed before the engine can be
started.
WARNING To avoid personal injury, before engog
ing the P.T.O., be sure the attachment is clear
of any obstacles.

you thot an attachment has power. The light will
operate only if ignition key is in he ON
position. Light will turn off if P.T.O. switch or
ignition key is turned off. IMPORYANT Before
starting tractor, check light. For your safety,
keep warning light operating corr!!v HEADLIGHT
SWITCH This rocket type switch turns the lighfs
ON and OFF. To turn lights ON. push top of swifch
in. To turn iights OFF. push bottom of switch
in NOTE he erpine must De running for the
lights to operate. (Dimming of lights when engine
is idlino is normal.)

PARKING BBAKE LATCH This latch is hand operated
and sets the parking brake. The latch is located
on the right-hand side of the frame above the
footrest. TO SET Depress brake clutch pedal
completely and slide latch forward and up to SET
position (see circied illustration Fig. 2.1A). TO
RELEASE Depress brake clutch peclal unfil latch
releases. To avoid personal injury, the parking
be set before the operator leaves
ATTACHMENT LIFT LEVER I efer to Fig. 2.3A.

This controi will raise or lower attachments
(mowers. snow- throwers etc.).
Be sure attachment has been properly mounted
before using lift lever. To raise attachment,
pull lever back until the lock engages itself. To
lower attachment. pull lever back, depress button
on top of lever with your thumb and push lever
forward. NOTE An optional electric lift is
available as an accessory from your dealer. It is
recommended for aftachments other than mower and
front snow blade. WARNING To ovoicl personal
injury, never operate mower withaftachmenflifileve
r in ofronsportposi- tion. Mower must be lowered
completely before operating. DO NOT OPERATE MOWER
WITH GUARDS REMOVED. AMMETER The ammeter
indicates whether baftery is charging or dis-
charging.

Normal operation of the tractor will keep the
battery fully charged. NOTE If ammeter does not

  • Now that you hove located the controls and
    understand their operation and function it isime
    to test ride your new tractor. Dohis without
    operating an attachment until you have the feel
    of the unit.

    which will allow the engine to start only if the
    brake clutch pedal is fully depressed, the P.T.O.
    is in the OFF position and the operator is
    properly seated.
  • BEFOBE STARTING
  • Be certain that the engine crankcase is filled
    with oil and the engine serv'ice instructions
    have been followed com- pletely.
  • Sit on the tractor seat in the notmol operating
    position.
  • Place shift lever in NEUTf2AL position.
  • Move P.T.O. to OFF position.
  • Set engine speed conFol in mid-position between
    SLOW and FAST.
  • Pull choke outward i1 starting a cold engine.
    Choke might not be required for warm engine
    starting.
  • Fully depress brake clutch pedal. TO START
  • Turn ignition key to STAI?T until the engine
    starts. Do not engage sfarter for more than a 10
    second duration.
  • As the engine warms up push choke in and move
    engine speed control to FAST.
  • TO OPERATE
  • Sfarf out in 1stgeor1. TO CHANGE SPEED, fully
    depress brake clutch pedal and move lever to
    desired position. Remove foot slowly and
    completely from pedal to engage drive. Do not
    shiff in motion. Try all gear positions.

4 MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION
WARNING To avoid personal injury, always turn
engine alt anus wait for all movement to stop,
remove spark plug wire(s) from spark plugs
before cleaning, moking any repairs or adjust-
ments. TUNE-UP SPECIFICATIONS TWIN CYMNDER

  • DAlkY SCHEDULE
  • GENERAL Make general visual inspection of
    tractor for loose or damaged ports. Check nuts
    and bolts periodically to insure against
    looseness caused by vibration or rough han-
    dling. Check for oil leaks from engine and
    kansoxle. Dam- aged ports should be repoirecl or
    replaced before using tractor again.
  • ENGINE OIL LEVEL Refer to the SET-UP AND
    ASSEMBLY sec-
  • tion("Initial Servicing) for proper type of oil
    and crankcase capacity. Check oil level with
    tractor on level ground and the engine stopped.
    Before removing dipstick. clean dirt from around
    dipstick and opening.

3. I2OTATING SCREEN lnspect rotating screen for
chaff or dirt build up and clean as required
(Fig. 4.2A).
4. AUCLEANER? Visually inspectaircleoner if
operating under dusty conditions(Fig. 4.2A).
"With valve spring installed.
Insome areas, local lawrequiresthe use of a
resistorspork plug so as fo suppress ignition
interference of airwave signals. If an engine was
originally equipped with resistor spark plugs. be
sure to use the some fype of spark plugs for
replacement. BREAX-IN MAINTENANCE AND
LUBftlCATlON IMPORTANT Apply oil and grease
carefully and only where required. Oil or grease
on drive Delfs or pulleys will cause slip-
pageand lossofdrive.ThoroughIywipe up any
excessgreose. oil and spills. For maximum
efficiency and trouble free service, make the
following periodic inspections of the tractor.
For engine main- tenance. refer to the SET-UP AND
ASSEMBLY section ("Initial Servicing). 1. The
engine oil should be changed after fhe first 5
hours of operation (thereafter every 25 hours).
The oii drain cap is locatecl on the right-hand
side of engine just above frame between the
engine mounting bolts. Race tractor on a level
surface. Place an oil drain pan under drain and
remove oil drain cap. The best time to change oil
is just after me engine has been run. After the
oil has been drained. replace the oil drain cap.
I?emove fhe oil fill cap and dipstick. For proper
type of oil and crankcase capacity refer to the
SET-UPANDASSEMBLY section (Initial Servicing).
Add half of required amount of oil. oil capacity
is 3 pints(1.42 liters) check oil level, then add
remaining amount of oil to reach oil level on
dipstick. Do notoverfiII.When checkingoil
IeveI.screwdipstick assembly firmly but slowly
until capbottoms o? tube.Dipstick assembly must
be securely assembled into tuDe at all times when
engine is operating.
  1. BATTERY Terminals should betightandfreeofcorrosio
    n.The hold down should be snug over battery. Top
    of battery should be clean and dry. Check levei
    of elecfioylte. Main- tain electrolyte level up
    to the bottom of vent walls. Add clean distilled
    water as needed.
  2. OPEI2ATING LIGHTS Check operation of all lights
    before starting and using your tractor. NOTE To
    check operation of headlights engine must be

    Clean by tapping gently on flat surface. If very
    dirty, replace car- tridge. or wash in a low or
    nonsudsing detergent and warm water solution.
    Rinse thoroughly with flowing water from inside
    out, until water is clear.Cartridge must be
    allowed to stand and air dry thoroughly before
    using. Service more often if necessary.
  • IMPORTANT Petroleum solvents. such as kerosene.
    are not to be used to clean cartridge. They may
    cause de- terioration of the cartridge. DO NOT
    OIL CAf2Tf2IDGE. DO NOT USE Ff?ESSU!?IZED AIP TO
    CLEAN OI? DAY CACTI IDGE.

3. CLEAN COOUNG SYSTEM Grass. chaff ordirf may
clog the rotating screen and the air cooling
system, especially after prolonged service in
cutting tall dry grasses. I?emove the blower
housing and clean the areas shown (Fig. 4.3A) to
avoid overspeeding, overheoting and engine
damage. Clean more often if necessary. Clean
muffles area to re- move all grass. dirt and
combustible debris.

SPAI K PLUGS Replace and set gap at .030 as
necessari (Fig.d.3B). Sparking can occur if wire
terminals do not fit firmly on spark plugs.
Reform terminals as necessary. 5. Tf?ANSAXLE The
transoxle is filled for life and should not
require cdditionaI lubrication. Make periodic
visual inspec- tions of transoxle. If damage or
leakage occurs. contact your authorized dealer
for service or repair.

BATTEI Y Wipe the outside of botfery clean with
soap and water. Clean off corroded battery
terminals with baking soda or steel wool. Tighten
cables securely to battery ter- minals. Apply a
light coat of petroleum jelly or chassis lube to
avoid corrosion. Check boftery hold down tighten
if needed. Keep vent holes in battery filler caps
open. f2e- move caps and inspect.If the holes are
clogged. clean ouf using a small piece of wire.
Do not blow out. I?epIace COps.
BODY CAf2E The best way to preserve the point
finish on your tractor is tokeep it clean with
frequentwashings.Wash the tractor with either
warm (Never Hot) or cold water. Do not wash your
tractor in the direct rays of the sun, and not
while the sheet metal surfaces are hot. Neverwipe
dirt from a dry pointed surface, as this may
scratch the finish. Polishing your tractor with a
paste wax will provide an added degree of
protection against tar. oil, tree sap and ofher
foreign matter.
