PREP ARING THE TRACTOR
The tractor must be equipped Frith an 8-Inch
stroke hydraulic cylinder that conforms to
ASAE -SAE standards.
II possible, set the rear wheels of the tractor
so the ground wheels of the fertilizer unit will
run in the center of the tracks left Dy the rear
tractor wheels. it this cannot be done, it is
best to ad)ust the tractor wheels so the
fertiliser unit wheels run entirely out or the
rear tractor wheel tracks.
On tractors with adjustable drawbar, place the
drawbar approximately 15 inches from the
ground and bolt it to the center of the tractor
5rawbar support.
PREPARING THE FER TIL IZER UNIT
LUBRICATING THE UNIT Lubricate your fertilizer
unit according to Instructions on page 34.
ADJUSTING ROW WIDTHS
The Flexi-P lantern can be mounted on the front
bar of the 184 Fertilizer Unit for 24- to 38-inch
row widths or on the rear bar for 22- to 40-inch
row widths.
Regular and systematic lubrication in the best
assurance against breakdowns and delays. It
will help you get better service from your ferti-
lizer unit and save on your maintenance costs.
The Flexi-Planters can be mounted on the front
bar of the 186 Fertilizer Unit for 22-inch row
widths only, or on the rear bar for 22- or
24-inch row widths.
CHECIZNGTIREINFLATION Inflate the 7.00 x 13 tires
to 30 pounds of air pressure.
Loosen the four bolts on each Flexi-Planter.
Slide the planter a to the desired position and
tighten the bolts. Rosen the bolts on the
carrying wheel frame and position the carrying
wheels so they are centered between the rows.
Tighten the bolts.
DETERMINING FERTILIZER P MACEhIENT When it is
desired to place the fertilizer di- rectly in the
row with the seed, mount the 71 Flexi-Planters on
the front bar of the fertiliEer unit.
Dimension "A" is from the center of the ferti-
liser unit to the location on the bar where the
in- side Flexi-Planters are to be centereL
Dimen- sion "B" is from the location of the
inside Flexi - Planters to the location where the
outer Flexi- Planters are to be centered.
To place the fertiliser directly under the
seed or to one side of the seed, mount the Flexi-
Planters on the rear bar of the fertilizer unit.

ó Ogerofïon AdJttsfing Marbers Adjust the markers
for the corrent row spac- ing. The distance from
the center of the fertiliser unit to the marker
disk should equal the number out rows being
planted multiplied by the row spae - ing. For
example lf planting six 22-Inch rows, the
distance from the center of the fertiliser unit
to the marker disk should be 6 times 22, or 132
inches. The regular marker for the 184 will
adjust for row spacings of 28 to 36 inches. The
regu- lar marker for the 186 Will adjust for 22-
and 24-inch xow spacings.

Turn each marker pipe so bracket A is in
positton illustrated. Tighten the set screws se-
curely to hold markers in position. The angle of
each marker disk may be adjusted for various soil
conditions by loosening bolt B and turn- ing
the disk. After adjustment i8 made, tighten bolt
B securely.
For row spactngs of 22 to 26 inches with the
184, the optional olfset marker must be installed
on the regular marker.
For row spacings of 38 to 40 inches with the 184,
the marker extensions must be installed on the
regular marker. To adjust the regular or
extension marker arm, loosen the set screws so
marker pipes will
To adjust the offset marker, loosen the U-bolt
and move the offset marker to the desired po-
sition. Tighten the U-bolt.
HITCHING TO TRACTOR With the fertilizer unit
resting on the front stand, back the tractor to
the fertilizer unit so the hitch is straight in
line with the tractor draw- bar.
Remove the clevis pin from the clevis and place
it in the hitch holea to hold the clevis
straight out. If the clevis is installed in the
up- per hole, place the clevis pin in the middle
hole to hold the clevis straight out.

MARKER CONTROL CHAINS
Install the remote hydraulic cylinder and set the
stop "A" so the cylinder will retract alt the
way. This will permit the Flext-Planter press
wheels to gauge the planting depth at all times.
Install the hydraulic hose in the hose holder.
Ex- tend the cylinder and disconnect the
transport links from the transport lug.
Retract the hydraulic cylinde r until the ferti-
lizer unit hitch is the same height as the
tractor drawbar. Attach the clevis to the
tractor draw- bar with the clevis pin and secure
it in place with the retaining pin and spring
locking pin.
PIN
Extend the hydraulic cylinder and place the stand
in the raised position securtng it with the
spring locking pin.
Attach the chain arm at rlght angles to the
tractor drawbar. Tighten the bolt securely as the
marker arm must be held rigidly to the tractor
drawbar. To unhitch the fertiliser unit from the
tractor reverse the above procedure. CAUTION
When the Flexl-Planters are mounted on the rear
bar place fertilizer unit In the transport
position. Position the rear stand approximately
four Inches above the ground before unhooking the
fertilizer unit from the tractor. Place stand In
raised position after hitching fertilizer unlt to
tractor.

Wtth the remote hydraulic cylinder extended to
maximum length, pull marker llft chains tight at
each end of fertiliser unit and adjust each lift
chain In the marker chain retainer so marker
arm is snug against the marker stop.
MARKER CONTROL CHAINS ktARKER CONTROL LEVER
Place the loose end of each marker chain in the
marker stop. CAUTION Keep the loose end of each
marker chain In the marker stop at nll times,
except when planting. TRANSPOR TIHG
Pull the right-hand marker control chain until
marker control lever points to left-hand side of
fertilizer unit, as illustrated.
TRANSPORT LINKf
TRANSPORT LUG
Attach the spring to chain arm, and hook the
left-hand marker control chain to spring at the
shortest link possible, without stretching the
spring. Now pull the left -hand marker control
chain until the marker control lever points to
right- hand side of fertilizer unit.
Connect the transport links to the transport lug
before transporting fertiliser unit. Place
spring locidng pin in inner hole "A of trans-
port pin.
Attach the spring to chain arm, and hook the
right-hand marker control chain to spring at the
shortest link possible, without stretching the
spring,
When transporting the fertiliser unit on a road
or highway at night or during the day, use
accessory lights and devices for adequate warning
to operators of other vehicles. In this regard,
check local government regula- tions, Various
safety lights and devices are available at

Operation 9 When the marker control arm points
to the left-hand side of the fertilize r unit, as
illustrat- ed, the right-hand marker will drop.
The marker control arm will stay in this po-
sition, and the right-hand marker will raise and
drop when fertilizer unit is raised and lowered
until the tractor is tttrned sharply to the
right. Then the left-hand marker control chain
will tighten and point the marker control arm
to- ward the right-hand side of the fertilizer
unit and the left-hand marker will drop when
fertilizer unit is lowered. The marker that is
down will automatically raise when the planter is
raised.
TRANSPORT LUG
After reaching the field, remove the trans- port
links from the transport Aug and place the
transport links in position illustrated
Place spring locking pin in hole B of transport
pin.
RIGHT-HAND MARKER CONTRO L CHAIN
MARKERS Remove the end of each marker chain from
the marker stops before lowering the fertilizer
unit in the field.
NOTE For planting the last your rows next to a
fence the markers can be held up 6y inserting the
marbez chains in the marbez stops. The position
of the marker control lever will determine which
marker will drop when the ferti- lizer unit is
lowered.
LEFT-HAND MARKER CONTROL CHAIN
If the right-hand marker will not drop after a
sharp left turn, shorten the right-hand marker
control chain at spring, one link at a time, un-
til ttght-hand marker will drop after a sharp
left turn. Shorten the left-hand marker
control chain if left-hand marker fails to drop
after a sharp right turn.

FERTILIZER OPENERS
When the Flexi-Plaritera are mounted on the rear
bar of the fertilizer unit, either the liquid or
dry fertiliser can be placed in the row below the
seed, or to one side of the seed, with double-
disk openers,
COTTER PN
When it is desired to place the fertilizer in the
row below the seed, the 16-inch double-disk
openers are recommended. They are mounted on
the front bar oJ the fertilizer unit in a direct
line with the seed opener of the
Flexi-Planter. When it is desired to place the
fertilizer to one side of the seed, either
12- or 16-inch double -disk openers can be used.
The cotter pin in each depth adjusting strap
determines how deep the fertilizer is placed in
the soil. To place the fertilizer deeper, locate
the cotter pin in a higher hole in the adjusting
strap. To place the fertilizer shallower, locate
the cotter pin in a lower hoie in the strap.
