OPERATION
  • This chisel plow is ideally suited for seedbed
preparation, stubble-mule h and fallow tillage,
field roughing to reduce erosion and increase
    moisture absorption, weed killing, heavy-duty
    field cultivating and pasture renovation.
  • Each model of the 250F Series is a three-
section, hinged chisel plow with an 11-foot c
enter section. All four chisel plow wheels are
adjustable for equal sweep penetration in uneven
ground. Offset hlnges on out riggers help chisel
plow move smoothly through rough ground and
    maintain uniform working depth.
  • PR E PARING THE CHISE L PLOW
  • Before taking the 250F to the field, be sure the
chisel plow is lubricated thoroughly (page 13),
and wheel bearings are adjusted properly (page
8). Cheek tire inflation pressure (page 8),
stand- ard spacing (pages 29 to 36). Make sure
all nuts, bolts and clamps are tight (pages 5 and
    8).
  • PREPARING THE TRACTOR
  • Before hitching the chisel plow to the tractor,
pin the tractor drawbar in a fixed, centered po-
sition. Although a swinging drawbar makes turn-
ing easier, a fixed drawbar provides greater
    stability.
  • See your tractor operator's manual Jor proper
ballast and tire inflation when tractor is used
    to tow heavy implements.
  • ATTACHING HYDRAULIC CYLINDER
  • Connect hydraulic hoses to the cylinder and
install cylinder on chisel plow before hitching
    tractor to chisel plow.
  • NOTE Make sure re lief valves are installed on
the hoses as slioum at tire right and on page 23.
  • If cylinder is new, bleed the air from both the
cylinder and hoses before attaching the cylinder
to the chisel plow. To bleed the cylinder, connect

the hoses to the tractor hydraulic system, ho.
the cylinder with the piston rod down, and extei
and retract the piston rod several times unt the
cylinder and hoses fill with oil. Add oil to the
tractor hydraulic system to ri place the oil
pumped into the cylinder and hos e. See your
tractor operator's manual for hydraul system
adjustments. HYDRAULIC CYLINDER

T POSITION To raise the chisel plow to transport
positio fully extend the hydraulic cylinder until
the re hole in the depth control bar appears in
fro of the slotted plates. Insert the transport
pin rear hole and fasten with a spring locking
pin.

Operation 5 For shallower tillage, turn cranks
clockwise (lug moves closer to wheel frame
arm). Because the cables have a tendency to
stretch during the first few days of use, set the
adjust- ing nuts close to the end of the threads
on the cable ends. Take up the cable slack by
tightening the nuts against the wheel frame arms.
To lower the ehtsel plow to operating position,
extend the cylinder and remove the transport
pin from the rear hole in the depth control bar.
Then, retract the cylinder to lower the chisel
plow. Place the transport pin in the front hole
and fasten with a spring locking pin.
CLAyPS To lengthen or shorten cables, loosen
the cable clamps. The U-bolt of the two outer
clamps should rest on the cable end. Space clamps
about three inc hes apart. Make sure clamps are
tight.
HITCHING CHISEL PLOW TO TRACTOR
Place the transport pin in the front hole of the
depth control bar, as shown above, and lower the
chisel plow until the frame balances on the
wheels. Attach the elevis to the tractor draw-
bar. If necessary adjust the chisel plow hitch in
the field, to level the chisel plow from front to
rear.

transport position and Slip locks over cranks
between stop and wheel frame arm. Turn cranks if
necessary to position locks. Fasten locks wtth
spring locking pins. Store locks on out- rtgger
truss rods when not in use.
The depth control cranks on the wheel frame arms
determine the working depth of tools and
Standards. The welded lug on each crank acts as
a stop for the wheel frame arm when the chisel
plow is lowered to the operating position.

bolt to pre- vent clevis bushing from rotating.
SWIVEL
Before going to the field, level the chisel plow
in transport position. Measure the distance be-
tween the top of each wheel and a straight edge
laid across the frame. The gap should be the same
above each wheel. Make sure tires are the same
size and equally inflated. Level the chisel plow
by adjusting the length of the transport cables.
When operating in the field, level the chisel
plow by adjusting the depth control
cranks. TURNING CHISEL PLOWIN THE FIELD
CLEVI S
The swivel hitch is especially useful in ex-
tremely rolling terrain. Invert the swivel hitch,
if necessary, to level the chisel plow. Adjust
the slotted nut at rear of hitch so swivel can
be turned but not moved from side to side.
The chisel plow may be turned at the end of the
field with the tool equipment in the ground or
raised, as desired. When turning, be sure all
four chisel plow wheels are turning forward, to
pre- vent damage to the machine. TRANSPORTING
CHISEL PLOW CAUTION Make sure al I transport
and out- r lgger locks are securely fastened
before trans- portlng chisel plow.
LOCK NUT
ADJUSTING
Never exceed 10 mph when transporting the chisel
plow. Follow transporting safety suggestions
of- fered on page 9. On the adjustable hitch,
turn the screw to raise or lower the clevis.
Invert the adjustable hitch, if necessary, to
level the chisel plow. T1t,hten adjusting screw

OUTR IGGER LI FT
Extend the cylinder and raise the outriggers
until the lift arms move past the holes in the
lock-up brackets. Insert the lock-up pins in the
lock-up brackets and fasten with spring locking
pins. Retract the cylinder slightly so the out-
rigger lift arms rest against the lock-up pins.
RAISING THE OUTRIGGERS
CAUTION Make sure lock-up pins ore fas- tened
In lock-up brackets, transport pin Is se- cured
in depth control bar, and transport locks ore
fastened on depth control cranks before
tronsportlng chlsel plow. LOWERING THE OUTRIGGERS
Lock chisel plow In transport position (see page
5) and retract the cylinder. Remove out- rlgger
llft cables from storage pin and fasten cables to
pin In the end of the cylinder pull bar.
Before lowering the outriggers, lock the
chisel plow in transport position, pin cable lift
yokes to lift arms, and pin lift cables to the
cylinder pull bar.
Extend the cylinder to take the weight of the
outrlgger lift arms off the lock-up pins. Remove
the lock-up pins and place them in the storage
holes. Retract the cylinder slowly so the out-
riggers maintain a constant tension on the cables.
Pin cable llft yokes to outrigger lift arms and
fasten lift yoke pin with cotter pinand spring
locking pin. Be sure outrigger lock-up pins are
placed in storage holes and lift cables extend
be- tween the two arms of the lock-up brackets.
Remove cable lift yokes from outrigger lift arms
and pin lift yokes to lock-up pins.
CAUTION Stoy cleor oT chisel plow when rolslng

FLAT SPRING STANDARDS
FLAT SPP!NG STAN DARD
Check and adjust the tightness of all wheel
bolts and wheel bearings, during the first week
of operation, and periodically thereafter. To
tighten the wheel bearing, remove the eotter
pin and tighten the slotted nut until there is a
slight drag on the bearings, while turning the
wheel. Then loosen or back off the nut one slot
and insert the eotter pin. There should be a
slight drag on the bearings following the
ad- justment. IMPORTANT Before using the chisel
plow each day, check the wheel frame bolts and
nuts to be sure they are tight. If the nuts are
loose, the weight of the plow wiII cause the
bolts to bend, resulting in unstable operation.
Make sure all standards are tightly clamped to
the frame.
FLAT CUSHION-SP RING STANDARDS
CARE OF RUBBER TIRES It is very important that ti
res be kept proper- ly inflated considerable
damage may result to the tire if proper pressure
is not maintained. Lack of pre ssure will allow
the tire to slip on the rim or the sidewalls to
buckle, resulting in torn valve stems, fabric
breaks, and uneven tread wear. Too much pressure
causes undue strain on fabric, excessive
tread wear, and allows the tire to cut in more
on wet ground, thus greatly increasing the draft.
Adjust the nuts on top of the springs for the
desired amount of standard movement. Tighten the
nuts for less movement loosen the nuts for more
movement. Leave 1 inch of threads showing above
the nuts for an average setting.
IMPOR TANT Adjust all springs to the same
degree of tightness to keep the chisel plow sta-
ble.
Recommended tire inflation pressure is
Keep the hinge pin set screw and all
clamp bolts tight.
7.60 x 15, 8-ply tires 48 lbs.
Using a torque wrench, tighten the front
standard bolt at A' ' to 300 ft-lbs torque.
Tighten the rear standard bolts at "B to 105
ft-lbs torque.
Equal pressure in all tires is necessary for
even penetrationa low tire will cause deeper
penetration on one side than the other. The in-
creased penetration on one side will result
in the chisel plow running unevenly.
12
Operation 9 STORAGE Proper preparation of the
chisel plow for storage after the season pays
off in years of dependable service. Here are some
suggestions to insure longer life for the
implement.
SAFETY SUGGESTIONS
The safety of the operator was one of the prime
considerations in the minds of John Deere
engineers when the chisel plow was designed.
Simple adjustments and safety features are built
into the machine wherever possible.
Clean the chisel plow and inspect it for worn or
damaged parts. Make repairs and replace- ments
as necessary.
However, investigation of thousands or farm
accidents shows that nearly one -third are caused
by careless use of machinery. You can make your
farm a safer place on which to live and work by
observing the following suggestions. Study these
carefully and insist they be followed by those
working for you and with you. To avoid injury,
always be careful while operating your tractor
and chisel plow.
Tighten all nuts and bolts. Replace broken or
missing eotter pins and spring locking pins.
Lubricate sheaves, wheels, and standards. Coat
chisels, sweeps, or shovels with a good rust
-preventive.
To prevent the chisel plow from rusting,
repaint areas where original paint has worn off.
Machinery should be operated only by those who
are responsible and have been delegated to do so.
Place the chisel plow on blocks to take the
weight off the tires, or remove the tires and
store them in a cool, dark place.
Never ride, or permit others to ride, on the
drawbar of the t raetor or on the chisel plow.
Store the chisel plow in a shed or cover with a
tarpaulin.
Never work on or under the chisel plow with- out
fi rst locking the chiset plow in transport
position or setting it up securely on blocks or
stands. WARNING LAMP
e
If It becomes necessary to transport chisel plow
on publtc roads or highways, check local
governmental regulations regarding transport of
oversi ze implements and the use of accessory
ltghts and devices for adequate warning to op-
erators of other vehicles on such roads. Various
s afety ltghts and devices may be obtained from
your John Deere dealer. Remember An accident is
usually caused by someone's carelessness, neglect
or oversight.

TOOTH DIAGRAMS Standards may be arranged in
two different patterns on the 250F Chisel Plow.
Each pattern has its advantages under certain
conditions. Tooth diagrams for each model are on
pages 28 to 36. DIAGONAL PATTERN
In the diagonal pattern, standards angle from
left-to -right and front-to -rear, as viewed
from the rear of the chisel plow. This
arrangement provides maximum trash clearance and
fits most operating conditions.
CB ise/s
When operating on hillsides with the left-hand
wheels on the high side, the diagonal pattern
reduces side slippage and gives the chisel plow
more stability. SP LIT PATTERN
In the split pattern, standards angle in both
directions from front to rear, forming a wedge.
Houbfe Pointed Chi se Is
Use this pattern if operating the chisel plow
on flat land in extremely hard and dry soil.
Under these conditions, the split pattern
keeps the chisel plow trailing in a straight line
behind the tractor. CAUTION Never work on or
under the chisel plow wlthout locking the chisel
plow In transport posltlon. As an added
safeguard, block the wheels and support the
chlsel plow with stands or blocks. TOOL
EQUIPMENT Chisels, sweeps and shovels illustrated
here and on the following page are available for
use on the 250F Chisel Plow. Avai'able sizes are
listed on page 15.
