Operate Safely DO NOT operate husker without
reading this opera- tor's m anual. DO NOT operate
husker with more than one person on the
tractor. DO NOT allow anyone to ride on the
husker. DO NOT operate close to a ditch or
creek. Slow down when turning. Drive slowly over
rough ground. Shift the tractor into a lower gear
when operating on steep slopes. Always shut off
tractor engine, shift to Park, and disengage
PTO when leaving tractor. Remove ignition key
when leaving tractor unattended. Apply both
tractor brakes evenly when making emer- gency
stops. Plan ahead. Wear relatively tight and
belted clothing to prevent being caught on some
part of the machine. Know the height and width of
the husker (and wagon). Beware of overhead
wires. Keep hands out of corn head snapping
rolls. Unauthorized modifications to the machine
may impair the funct on and/or safety and affect
machine life.
Protect Against Noise Prolonged exposure to loud
noise can cause impair- ment or loss of
hearing. Wear a suitable hearing device such as
earmuffs (A) Or ear plugs (B) to protect ag ainst
objectionable or un- comfortable loud noises.

Stay Clear of PTO Stop the engine ano be sure the
PTO has stopped before Connecting or
disconnecting a PTO shaft Making any adjustment
to PTO drive train or hitch Cleaning out PTO
driven equipment. PTO master shield should be in
place at all times except when connecting a PTO
drive line or for special applications as
directed in the operator's manual. The PTO shaft
guard should be in place when the PTO is not
being used.
Avoid Fires DO NOT operate husker without a fire
extinguisher near by. Fire extinguishers and
mounting brackets are avail- able. Order JD
AT62018 and JD 62019 from your John Deere dealer.
See page 52.
Transport Safely Use of flashing warning lights
and turn signals is recom- mended when towing
this equipment on public roads unless prohibited
by state or local regulations. An imple- ment
safety lighting kit is available from your John
Deere dealer. If attached, always raise the corn
head and install the safety support stop in the
rear position. Always move the husker tongue from
operating position to transport position. Always
raise the jackstand before transporting. Shift
the tractor into a lower gear when transporting
down steep slopes of hills. DO NOT transport
unless the reflectors and SMV em- blem are easily
visible from the rear. Stop slowly.
94 Safety
Practice Safe Maintenance Always lower corn head
before working on it. Install safety support pin
in transport position (bold arrow) if working
under corn head. Replace any guards or shields
removed for servicing. Block the wheels so the
husker remains stationary. DO NOT lubricate,
adjust, or clean the husker while it is
operating. Shut off tractor engine and remove key
when working on husker.
Mounting Tires Failure to follow proper
procedures when mounting a tire on a wheel or rim
can produce an explosion which may result in
serious injury or death. Do not attempt to mount
a tire unless you have the proper equipment and
experience to perform the job. Have it done by
your John Deere dealer or a qualified tire
repair service. When seating tire beads on rims,
never exceed 35 psi (241 kPa) or maximum
inflation pressures specified by tire
manufacturers for mounting tires. Inflation
beyond this maximum pressure may break the bead,
or even the rim, with dangerous explosive force.
If both beads are not seated when the maximum
recommended pressure is reached, deflate,
reposition tire, relubricate bead, and
reinflate. Detailed agricultural tire mounting
instructions, includ- ing necessary safety
precautions, are contained in John Deere
Fundamentals of Service (FOS) Manual 55, Tire and
Tracks, available through your John Deere dealer.
Such information is also available from the
Rubber Manufacturers Association and from tire
man- ufacturers.

Avoid High-Pressure Fluids Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Relieve pressure before discon- necting
hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections
before applying pressure. Keep hands and body
away from pinholes and nozzles which eject fluids
under high pressure. Use a piece of cardboard or
wood, rather than hands, to search for leaks. If
ANY fluid is injected into the skin, it must be
surgically removed within a few hours by a doctor
familiar with this type injury or gangrene may
result.
10Preparing Tractor
