ten to forty-five years, thus assuring the utmost
in good de- sign, high-grade workmanship and
thorough inspection, so essential to the
production of good plows.
Hi gh quality materials, precision production
methods, . and accurately controlled
heat-treating assure maxi- mum strength and long
life for every part.
Occasionally your plow may need new parts, or
require service not covered in this manual.
If so, we suggest that you take advantage o
the facilities offered by your John Deere
dealer, which assure you of gen uine J HN

OPER ATION IMPORTANCE OF PROPER ADJUSTMENT
Your new plow ie fully adjustable nd, when
properly adjusted to oper- te in the type of aoil
and field con- litione on your farm, it will do
a ood job of plowing at a minimum 'f expense. A
well adjusted plow tufts lighter ite furrow
slieee are
uniform in width and depth it covera trash it
leavea the aoil in proper condition to be worked
down into tbfl best-type seedbed. Improper
adjustment results in rapid wear and possible
breakage of parte, and ineffieient operation.
PREPARING THE PLOW BOLTS AND SET SCREWS
LOW DISKS
Before starting to work with a new plow sr one
which hae been stored, check to see that all
bolts and eet zcrewe are tight and all cotter
pins apread to keep them from fall- ing out.
Check the bolta that hold the plow diska to ace
that they are drawn up very tight.
The polished surfaces of the plow .iske and
scrapers have been painted with protective black
paint. In most cases it ia not necessary o remove
the black paint because t will wear oil quickly
upon contact with the soil. In those aoils where
he black paint will not wear off, emove with
gasoline, kerosene, or lieecl fuel. Be careful
when uairig any of these fuel so they do not
ignfitH Plow ehould e in a well-ventilated area
and iway from any zparlco or f1ames If the plow
ie not to be used im- nediately, protect the
polished 8u 'face by applying a coat of cup
or un grease. If plow is to be put in torage for
a considerable length of ime, see page 19.
A good practice is to check for loose bolts,
screwe, or parta when lubricating the plow. Loose
bolts are eaaily lost or cause exceaaive wear on
parte, resulting in po4eible eerioua damage to
the plow.

ubricated. See Lubrication Chart on age 22.

O PE RAT ION
PREPARING AND ADJUSTING TRACTOR
REAR WHEEL WEIGHT ING In average conditions, rear
wheel weights are not necessary. In those
conditions where it becomes neces- sary to add
weight to the rear wheels, see your tractor
Operator's Manual for weighting
instructions. Power can be lost and tire life cut
drastically by wheel slippage. Add- ing weight
also serves to stabilize the tractor when
plowing in rough or hillside fields.
For com plete tractor operating in- structions,
refer to your tractor Oper- ator's Manual, TIRE
INFLAT ION inflate the tractor tires as recom-
mended in the tractor Operator's Manual. For
plowing, add 4 pounds more air in right rear tire
than in left rear tire. Proper air pressure is
the most importart factor in satisfactory per-
formance and maintenanc.- of trac- tor and
implement tires. Underin- flation will damage
the cord body of the tire and cause a series of
radial breaks in the sidewall fabric. This may
occur on the inner sidewall of the furrow wheel
tire. If the tire buckles or wrinkles, the
air pressure should be increased to where
the sidewalls remain smooth while oper- ating. If
additional traction is required, add weight to
the wheels. Reducing the recommended air
pressure will make little difference in the
traction and may ruin the tires.
TRACTOR DRAWBAR Set the tractor drawbar in the
short high position and remove pina or bolts
so drawbar is free to
REAR WHEEL SETTING Tractor rear wheel settings
are de- termined by the location of the cen- ter
of cut of the plow. Therefore, it is necessary
to firat read Hitching Plow to Tractor on
the following pages. Then adjust the wheels
as explained on page 7. FRONT WHEEL SETTINGS On
side-front-end tractors, aet front wheels to
conform to rear wheel setting, center-to-center
of tread.
Check air pressures every two or three weeRs. Use
a special low pres- sure gauge having l-pound
gradua- tions.

OPERATION HITCHING PLOW TO TRACTOR
E 0 RAVEL

HINCH PARALLEL WITH LINE OF TRAVEL
Hitch the plow to tile tractor ao the center of
the plow hitch and tractor drawbar ace on a
direct line with the center of cut of the
plow. For example, on a 6-furrow plow eet to cut
10 inches on each disk, tire total cut is 60
inchee and the center (or one-half) of total cut
is 30 inchee. In thie example, set the tractor
wheels (on adjustable tread tractors) so the
inside of the tractor tiree are 30 inches away
from the center of the tractor as ehown below.
Set the plow hitch ao it ie 30 inches in from the
furrow wheel. Measure from the center of the
hitch to the inside of the plow furrow wheel
flange at the bottom, parallel to the ground. See
illustration above. To make this hitch
adjustment, move the hitch plate left or iBt
on the hitch cross- bar. See illustration on page
8. Ground conditions may require come change
in the original setting to correct the width of
cut on the front disk. Keep the plow hitch run-
ning as near straight and parallel to the line of
travel as possible and still obtain the correct
width of cut on the front disk. After the tractor
wheels and plow hitch have been set correctly,
attach the plow hitch to the tractor draw-
bar. HITCH AND WHEEL ADJUST- MENTS FOR HILLSIDE
PLOWING When plow ing on steep hillsidee, it is
sometimes necessary, z ith adjust- able tread
tractors, to use a wider wheel spacing than
recommended for stability reasons. Where a

OPERAT iON
HITCHING PLOW TO TRACTORContinued
Horizortt aI Hitch Adjust crzectts As described
on page 7, horizontal hitch adjustments are made
by mov- ing the hitch plate left or right on the
hitch crossbar. Moving the hitch plate toward the
outer end of the hitch crossbar de- creases the
cut of the front disk. Moving the plate toward
the plow frame increases the cut. Adjust the
hitch plate on the hitch crossbar so the front
disk cuts the proper width (from 8 to 12 inches).
The front disk should never cut more than the
other disks. When changing the position of the
hitch plate, it is usually necessary to adjust
the furrow axle steering bar to keep the front
furrow wheel running properly. The front
furrow wheel should run parallel with the line
of travel or with a slight lead toward the plowed
ground in heavy soil con- ditions. A Series of
holes in the etecr- ins bar allow the bar to be
moved in or out.
wheel spacing is necessary, always set the left
rear tractor wheel at the recommended position
and move t he right rear wheel out. This will
result in more nearly equalizing the weight on
the two rear wheels of the tractor when plowing.
Then center the tractor drawbar between the rear
wheels. TRAC K-TYPE TRACTORS AND WHEEL TRACTORS
OPERATED ON THE LAND Measure from the center
of the tractor to the outside of the right rear
tire or track and add four inches to permit
driving far enough away from the furrow to
prevent breaking it down. Then bolt the hitch
plate to the hitch crossbar to conform to this
measurement. ADJUST ING HITCH Adjustments built
into the hitch are of the greatest
importance. A wide range of hitch adjustments
are provided to adapt the plow to vari- ous aoil
conditions, depths of plow- ing, and to all types
of tractors.

Vertical Hitch Ad justment Three sets of holes
in the hitch plate allow the plate to be moved up
or down to obtain proper vertical hitch
adjustment. For average to shallow plowing, set
the hitch plate in the top holes. For medium
plowing, set hitch plate in center holes. For
deep plow ing, set the hitch plate in the
bottom holes. These settings apply to trac- tors
with the drawbar set at average height (17 inches
from the ground).
Hitch Clevis Coupler
HITCH ULEVI S COUPLER
A hitch clevis coupler ie available as special
equipment for attaching these plows to tractors
which have the forked or clevis-type drawbar.
Thie coupler will raise the hitching point to the
recommended height.
CUSH ION HITCH
The Cushion Hitch (SD 1714 A) ie available as
special equipment for the 600 and 600H Series
Disk Plows. This hitch will reduce shoclr
inn- posed on the disks, bearings, stand-
ards, and other parts of the plow when a solid
obstruction is encount- ered, as well as absorb
the continuous shock when operatinB in heavy,
tough field conditions.

SET SCREW COLLAR
On the 600H Series Plows, the re- mote hydraulic
cylinder raises and lowers the plow and
controls the depth of plow ing. The 600H
Series Plows can be equipped for hydraulic
operation with John Deere Powr-Trol or the
hydraulic system of any tractor hav- ing
sufficient capacity and utilizing a remote
cylinder that conforms to ASAE-SAE
standards. Your J hn Deere Remote Cylinder is
equipped with an adjustable piston atop, so the
working stroke may be adjusted to control the
working depth of the plow. The stroke may be
varied from 8-inch maximum to 0-inch minimum. For
complete op- erating and ad juating instruc-
tions for remote cylinder, refer to your
tractor Operator's Man- ual. When transporting,
raiae the plow to highest position by uee of the
re- mote hydraulic cylinder and inacrt hold-up

CYLINDER Before attaching hoecs to tractor,
relieve pressure in the tractor hy- draulic
syetem. To relieve pressure, atop tractor engine
and move remote cylinder coitro1 lever back and
forth several timea.
Wipe hose ends to remove azzy dirt before
inaertizzg izx brealz- away couplings. All
trapped air in the cylinder must be removed
after hoaes are connected to breakaway
couplings. To remove trapped air, first place
cylinder on tractor transport arm with home
end up. With engine stop- ped, engage pump. Then
start engine and operate the remote cylinder con-
trol lever back and forth seven or eight
times. With hold-up pin in transport po- sition,
install cylinder on plow. Ex- tend cylinder as
far as possible. Then move hold-up ptn to
operating po- sition. Attach hose to hoee
support, using S-hook and clamps provided. Adjust
the set acrew collar on the hose support ao the
rod will not in- terfere with either the plow or
trac- tor when turning. REMOVING CYLINDER Place
the plow in the lifted or transport
position. Remove hold up pin from operating
position and place in transport position.
Release load on the cylinder and remove spring
locking pins. The plow will be held in the
lifted position and can be transported
without replacing the cylinder.

fncfeec4'CIctcA The 600 Series Disk Plowe are
raieed and lowered by the enclosed clutch. A rope
attached to the clutch trip lever controls the
enclosed clutch. To lift the dicks out of the
ground for turning at the end of a row or for
tranepor ting, simply give the trip rope a
quick positive pull. To lower the plow, pull the
rope in the aame manner. NOTE! Do not ttfe o

DEPTH OF PLOfING
LEVELI NG SCREW DRANK
DEPTH ADJUSTING SCREW CRANK
SET SCREW
Depth can be set from approxi- mately 5 to 16
inches. There will be some variation in these
figures de- pending on size of disks. The depth
of plowing on the 600H Series Plows is controlled
by the re- mote hydraulic cylinder. On the 600
Series Plowa, it is controlled by the depth
adjusting screw crank.
A leveling screw crank i8 provided on both 600
and 600H Series Plowo to obtain a uniform depth
of plowing with each disk. After desired depth of
plowing is obtained with the rear disk, adjust
the leveling screw crank to regulate depth of the
front di8k in relation to the rear. Once the
600H Series Ptow is leveled, the plowing
depth may be changed without affecting
leveling. On the 600 Series Plow, the plow must
be leveled whenever depth of plowing is changed.
The worlds best safety device is a careful
operator.

The auxiliar y rear lift spring is regular
equipment on the 605H, 606, and 606H Plows. To
adjuet epring, simply turn nut on eyebolt to
desired position. If the tension is too little,
the land wheel may slide before lifting the plow.
If the tension is too great, the plow may
penetrate too slowly when dropped to its work.
fren Biff Sprny
Thelift spring, located at the front of the frame
should be carefully ad- justed so that the epring
will aeeist the plow when lifting. To increase or
decrease spring tension, turn spring bolt. If the
tension on the spring ie too little, the land
wheel on the 600 Series may slide, due to lack of
trac- tion, as the plow is lifted by the
clutch. If the tension is too great, the plow
will penetrate too slowly when dropped to i ts
work.
