Your new plow Behind your new plow is an or-
ganisation that has specialized in de- signing
and building plows for over one hundred and
twenty years . This plow was built in the world's
largest plow factory by experienced men, many
who have worked in this large plant for from
ten to forty-five years, thus assuring the
utmost in good design, high-grade workman- ship
and thorough inspection, so es- sential to the
production of good
High quality materials, precision production
methods, and accurately controlled
heat-treating assure maximum strength and long
life for every part. This manual has been
carefully prepared and illustr ated, so that you
may make the necessary adjust- ments for
adapting your plow to work properly in
practically all types of soil and field
conditions . These ad- justments such as proper
hitching and adjusting for width and depth of
cut, are fully covered in this manual.
Occaslonally your plow may need new parts, or
require service not covered in this manual. If
so, we suggest that you take advantage of the
facilltles othe red by your John Deere dealer ,
which assure you of genuine JOHN DE E RE Parts
and prompt know-how service in the field or
shop.
If you will furnish your deale r with the
information which should be recorded at the
bottom of this page, when the plow is delivered,
he can give you prompt and efficient service.
Study this manual carefully. Keep it handy, in a
she place, for future referenee.

Operation
Importance of proper Tire inflation adj us t men t
If plow is equipped with rubber- tired rear
wheel or gauge wheel, check to be sure it has 36
pounds of air pressure.
Your new plow is fully adjustable and, when prope
rly adjusted to op- erate in the type of soil
and field conditions on your farm, it will do a
good job of plowing at a minimum of expense. A
well-adjus ted plow pulls lighter its furrow
slices are uniform in width and depth it covers
trash it Ie aves the soil in proper condition to
be worked down into the best-type se
edbed. Improper adjustment results in rapid
wear and possible breakage of parts, and
inefficient operation. Preparing the plow
Lubrication Be sure plow has been prope rly
lubricated. See Lubrication Chart on pages 41
and 42.
Nuts, bolts, set screws, and eotter pins Before
starting to work with a new plow or one which
has been stored, check to see that all bolts
and set screws are tight and all cotter pins
spread to keep them from falling out. Check the
bolts that hold the plow bottoms to see that they
are drawn up very tight.
Bottoms and eoulters The polished surfaces of the
plow bottoms and coulters have been painted
with protective black paint. tn most cases it is
not necessary to remove the black paint because
it will wear off quickly upon contact with the
soil. In those soils where the black paint will
not wear off, re- move with gasoline, kerosene
, or diesel fuel.
Be careful when using any of theee fuelc so the
y do not ignite. Plow zhould be In a well-nenti
lated area and aha y from any 8 paKb8 O'K flottt
es.
If the plow is not to be used im- mediately,
protect the polished sur- faces by applying a
coat ot cup or gun grease. If plow is to be put
in storage for a cons ide rable length of time,
see pages 43 and 44.
A good practice is to check for loose bolts ,
screws, or parts when lubricating the plow. Loose
bolts are easily lost or cause excessive wear on
parts, resulting in possible seri- ous damage to
the plow.
12
operation 9 Preparing and adj us ting the tractor
For complete tractor operating instructions,
tire inflation pres sures , and use of rear-
mounted in- tegral implements , refer to your
tractor operator's manual.
REAR WFIEEL WEIGIJTING
In those conditions where it be- comes
necessary to add weight to the rear wheels ,
see your tractor ope rotors manual for
weighting in- structions.
TIRÉ INFLATION Proper air pressure is the most
important factor in satisfactory per- formance
and maintenance of trac- tor and lmplement
tires. Underin- nation will damage the cord body
of the tire and cause a series or radial breaks
in the s idewall fabric. This often oceurs on the
inner s idewall of the furrow whee1 tire. If the
tire buckles or wr inkles, the air pres- sure
should be increased to wlier e the sidewalls
remain smooth while operating.
Power can be lost and tire life cut drastically
by wheel s lippage. Adding weight also serves to
stabi - lize the tractor for working in rough or
hillside fields.
The ideal amount of added weight can be
determined by observing the tracks of the rear
whe els. When the tractor is pulling its rated
load, the soil between the tire lugs should be
broken or shifted. If too mueti weight has been
added, the tread marks will be clear and
distinct. If too Iittle weight has been added,
the tread marks will be entirely oblite rated.
If additional traction is required, add weight to
the wheels. Reducing the recommended air
pressure will make little difference in the
traction and may ruinthe tres.
Liquid weight Water and calcium chloride solu
tion is an eoonomieal means of add- ing we ight
to rear wheels. Calcium chlor ide is re
eommended rathe r than water as it will not
freeze. See your tractor operator's manual or
your John Deere dealer.
Cagtizon tveighte Where weight in addition to or
in place of liquid weight is required, cast-iron
weights can be bolted to the rear whee1s. This
type of weight can be secured from your JohnDee
re dealer.
Check air pressures every two or three weeks. Use
special low pres- sure gauge in one-pound
gradua- tions.
13
10 operation TRACTOR DRAWBAR
SWAY LOCkS (530, B30, 730, 520, 620, and 720
Series Tractors)
On the 1010, 2010, 3010, and 4010 Series
Tractors, remove the draw- bar from the tractor.
This will pro- vlde ample room for the vane cyl-
inder and hoses. When operating these prows with
other model tractors , set the draw- bar In the
short, high posltlon and bolt it to the extreme
left side of the support. On those 730 ana 720
Series Trac- tors equipped with a straight draw-
bar, set the drawbar in the short position ana
bolt the dr awbar to me extreme left side of the
support. If also equipped with hammer strap,
remot e the hammer strap and set drawbar In the
short, left position SWAY BLOCKS (2010, 3010,
and 4010 Series Tractors)
When the plow is to be used with a 730 or 720
Tractor equipped with sway locks , remove the
sway locks from the tractor.
SWAY LOCK
When the plow has bottoms equip- ped with
conventional-type shares and the plow is to be
used with a 530, 630, 520, or 820 Tractor, spe-
cial sway locks (AR21199R) must be used on the
tractor hitch. These sway locks, available from
your John Deere dealer, eliminate plow sway
in transport and prevent the share points from
coming into contact with the tractor tires when
the plow is rotated.
NOTE If' tractor 1s a I y e ad y egulpped with
regular aeon loe8e, remove them attd Yfifito.ce
Frith the Sway blocks must be attached in the
upper position as shown in the above
illustration. This wtll elimi- nate side sway
when the plow is raised for transport but will
permit lateral flexibility when working.

the tractor is equipped with an external powe
rshaft speed changer, the speed changer,
support, and drawbar extension must be removed
to eliminate any interference be- tween the
tractor and the plow. See instructions received
with the speed changer.
FRONT WHEEL SETTING The 825 Series Plows are not
rec - ommended for use on tractors equip- ped
with fixed -tread front axles.
  • Be sure the tractor pores- shaft is cauezed by

On wide-front-axle tractors, set front wheels to
conform to rear wheel setting, center-to-center
of tread.
FRONT END WEIGHTING For those plow and tractor
com- binations whleh require additlonal front end
weighting for transport stability purposes, add
front end weight to tractor as shown in chart on
following page. Cast-iron front end weights may
be secured from your John Deere dealer. Calcium
Chloride solution in front tires also may be
desirable in addition to welghts,
REAR WHEEL SETTING
Adjust rear wheels of the tractor equi-dlstant
from the center llne of the tractor. The
distance between the center line of the tractor
and the inside of the tire is determined by the
cut of the plow. Set the rear
