OPERATION rods are properly adjusted, there
will be no binding when the drive

wheel is turned. Slots are provided in the rod
sup- ports so each rod can be leveled and aligned
properly. The rods should be eente red and the
set screw in the locking spool should be tight
at all times. Each rod can be set at any of four
working depths. The deepest position is shown at
left. Change the position of the rod supports on
the support brackets for the various working
depths.
The rotary rods are f riction- driven from the
gauge wheels of the tool bar or chisel plow.
Two operations, sweeping the field and rod
weeding, can be com- bined into a once -over
operation. The rod weede r attachment makes
it possible to close the top layer of soil
against evaporation immediately be- hind the
chisel plow. ROD SUPPORT
REAR STANDARD SPRINGS Tighten springs on the
rear, row of flat cushion-spring standard clamps
as much as possible, to reduce move- ment of the
standards. LEVELING TOOL BAR OR CHISEL PLOW
LOCKNG SPOOL
Adjust the tool bar or chisel plow so it is
level from side to side and from front to rear.
See tool bar or chisel plow operator's manual. If
it cannot be adjusted so it is exactly level from
front to rear during op- eration, it is better to
have the front a little lower than the rear.

plow or tool bar and must turn freely at all
times. When the

run with just enough pressur e on the chisel plow
wheel or gauge wheel to turn the rotary rod. The
drive wheel must be kept run- ning parallel with
the wheel yoke. Adjust the wheel in the slots in
the yoke to keep the wheel parallel with the
sides of the yoke. When the depth of ope ratton
is changed it is nec essary to change the spring
or tension rod adjustment.
See tractor operator's manual for instructions on
tractor tire inflation, added ballast, and use of
rear mount- ed implements. When using the rod
weeder attach- ment on the 500D or 500E Series
Tool Bar on a 3020, 3010, 4020, or 4010 Tractor
recommended length for the 3-point hitch center
link is 26 inches. The lift links should be
adjusted to a length of 28-1/2 inch- es. Lower
the collars on both lift links to the second hole
to permit up and down movement of the lift
links. Locate the selector lever in the D
position. Set sway blocks in category 2 upper
position except when used with the 528D or 528E
Tool Bar. Sway blocks set in the category 2 lower
position are required on all tractors used with
the 528D or 528E Tool Bar and 1528 Rod Weeder
At- tachment.
TIRE INFLATION
It is very important that each drive wheel
tire be properly in- flated consider able
damage may re- sult to the tire if proper
pressure is not maintained. Recommended drive
wheel tire Inflation is 30 psi.

proper adjustment.
The center of the standard to whtch a drlve

SAFETY SUGGES TIONS
To avoid injury, always be careful while
operating your tractor and tool bar or
chisel plow with rod weede r attachment.
All machinery should be operated only by those
who are responsible and have been delegated to
do so.
When transporting the tool bar or Chisel plow on
rood or highway at night or during the day, use
occes- sory lights and devices for adequate
warning to operators of other ve- hicles. In
this regard check local governmental
regulations. Various safety lights and devices
may be ob- tained from your John Deere dealer.
Never ride or permtt others to ride on the
drawbar of the tractor or on the tool bar or
chisel plow.
Remember Bn accident is us- ualty caused by
someone's careless- ness, neglect or oversight.
