Introduction
This saety alert symbol identifies important
safety messages in this manual. When you see this
symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal
injury and carefully read the message that
follows. Unless noted otherwise "right-hand and
left-hand" sides are determined by facing the
direction in which the backhoe operates. Front is
at the bucket and rear is at the backhoe control
ie vers. Record your backhoe model and serial
number in the space provided on page 59. Your
warranty appears on your copy of the purchase
order which you should have received from your
dealer. Meas ureme nts are shown with their
respective Metric equivalents throughout this
operator's manual. These equivalents are the SI
(International System) Units of Measure.

1550 BACKHOE DELIVERY CHECK LIST
TO THE DEALER
After the backhoe has been assembled and
lubricated, inspect it thoroughly to be sure it
is functioning properly before delivering it to
the customer. The following check list is a
reminder of points to check. Check off each item
as it is found satisfactory or after proper
adjustment has been made. The John Deere Delivery
Receipt, when properly filled out and signed by
the dealer and customer, verifies that the
predelivery and delivery services were satis-
factorily performed. When delivering this
machine, give the customer a copy of the delivery
receipt and the operator's manual. Explain their
purpose. Be certain to retain your copy of the
packing list for shipping bundle
information. PREDELIVERY CHECK LIST The following
check list is a reminder of points to inspect.
Check off each item as it is found satisfactory
or after proper adjustment is made. C Lubricate
all lubrication points. See pages 23-24.
The following check list is a reminder of very
important information which should be conveyed
directly to the customer at the time the backhoe
is delivered. Check off each item as it is fully
explained to the customer.
E Advise the customer that the life expectancy of
this or any other machine is dependent on regular
maintenance including lubrication and bolt
torque. Tell the customer all about safety
precautions that must be observed while using
this backhoe. When backhoe is transported on a
road or highway at night or during the day,
accessory lights and devices should be used for
adequate warning to operators of other
vehicles. Give the operator's manual to the
customer and explain all operating
adjustments. To the best of my knowledge, this
machine has been delivered ready for field use
and the customer has been fully informed as to
proper care and operation.
0 Check to be sure that all bolts are tight and
all cotter pins are spread. See torque chart on
page 30. Paint all unpainted bolts and nuts and
any parts scratched in shipment. Check hydraulic
system to be sure that all compo- nents are
tight. Operate backhoe. If backhoe does not
operate as illustrated on control lever decal,
the hydraulic hoses are not connected correctly.
See page 53. This backhoe has been tested and, to
the best of my knowledge, is ready for delivery
to the customers

OPERATE BACKHOE SAFELY
2-3 ,
To prevent instability before attaching or
detaching, be sure boom and dipperstick are
extended and bucket is on the ground. Operate
backhoe only from backhoe operator's seat. Lower
stabilizers and bucket to ground before leaving
operator s seat. Never allow anyone to work under
a raised bucket. Do not use the backhoe bucket as
a battering ram. Do not dig under the
stabilizers. Soft ground or sandy soil will
cave-in. Do not drive near the edge of a ditch,
gully or excava- tion. Be careful to prevent the
unit from tipping sideways if it strikes an
excavation, ditch, or other irregularity,
especially on hillsides. The rate of travel on
hillsides and curves should always be such that
there is no danger of tipping. Do not oil,
grease, or adjust the unit while it is in
motion. When digging far to either side and in
close, the bucket may contact the stabilizers and
could cause serious damage. Carry the backhoe low
at all times, especially when wofking on a
sidehill or backing up an incline. Always lower
the bucket to the ground before leaving the
operator's seat. Watch for overhead wires. Never
touch wires with any part of the backhoe. Be sure
bystanders are clear of the backhoe before
lowering stabilizers or moving the boom. Be sure
area is clear of underground obstructions before
digging ROLL-GARD PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT If
ROLL-GARD protective equipment is loosened or
removed for any reason, make certain all parts
are re installed correctly. Tighten mounting
bolts to proper torque. See pages 32 and 37.

Safety 3
PROTECT AGAINST NOISE Prolonged exposure to loud
noise can cause impair- ment or loss of
hearing. Wear a suitable hearing protective
device such as earmuffs (A) or earplugs (B) to
protect against objec- tionable or uncomfortable
loud noises.
AEarmuffs BEar Plugs
AVOID HIGH PRESSURE FLUID LEAKS Escaping fluid
under pressure can have sufiicient force to
penetrate the skin, causing serious injury.
Before disconnecting lines, be sure to relieve
pressure. Before applying pressure, be sure
connections are tight and lines, pipes and hoses
are not damaged. Use a piece of cardboard or
wood, rather than your hands, to search for
leaks. If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor
at once. Serious infection or reaction can
develop if proper medical treatment is not
administered immediately.
TRANSPORT SAFELY To prevent backhoe movement,
always engage boom lock lever (A) and swing
lock-out (B) when transport- When tfansporting
the unit on a road or highway at night or during
the day, use accessory lights and devices for
adequate warning to the operators of other
vehicles. In this regard, check local
governmental reg- ulations. Various safety lights
and devices are avail- able from your John Deere
dealer. ABoom Lock Lever WSwing Lock-Out

Escaping hydraulic oil under pressure can have
sufficient force to pen- etrate the skin, causing
serious personal injury. Before disconnecting
lines be sure to relieve all pressure. Before
applying pressure to the system, be sure all
con- nections are tight and that lines, pipes and
hoees are not damaged. Oil escaping from a very
small hole can be almost invisible. Use a piece
of cardboard or wood, rather than hands, to
search for suspected leaks. If injured by
escaping hydraulic oil, see a doctor at once.
Serious infection or reac- tion can develop if
proper medical treat- ment is not administered
immediately. IMPORTANT The pressure port is the
top port on backhoe valve. Pressurizing bottom
return valve port will damage O- rings in
valve. Connect pressure (top hose) coupler from
