INTRODUCTION This safety alert symbol identifies
impor- tant safety messages in this manual. When
you see this symbol, be alert to the possi-
bility of personal injury and carefully read the
message that follow s. Right-hand and left-hand
sides are determ ined by facing the direction in
which the backhoe operates. Front is at the
bucket and rear is at the backhoe control
levers. Record your backhoe serial number in the
space pro- vided on page 67. Your warranty
appears on your copy of the purchase order which
you should have received from your
dealer. Measurements are shown with their
respective Metric equivalents throughout this

1650 BACKHOE DELIVERY CHECK LIST
TO THE DEALER
After the backhoe has been assembled and
lubricated, inspect it thoroughJy to be sure it
is functioning properly before delivering it to
the customer. The following check list is a
reminder of points to check. Check off each item
as it is found satisfactory or after proper
adjustment has been made. The John Deere Delivery
Receipt, when prope rly filled out and signed by
the dealer and customer. verities that the
predelivery and delivery services were satis-
factorily performed . When delivering this
machine, give the customer a copy of the delivery
receipt and the oper atOr'S manual. Explain their
purpose. Be certain to reta.n your copy of the
packing list for shipping bundle information.
The following check list is a rem inder of very
important information which should be conveyed
directly to the customer at the time the backhoe
is delivered. Check off each item as it is fully
explained to the customer.
0 Advise the customer that the life expectancy of
this or any other machine is dependent on regular
maintenance incJudtng lubrication and bolt
torque. If applicable, advise customer of
tractor rpm re - striction. See page 13. Tell
the customer all about safety precautions that
must be observed while using tnis backhoe. When
backhoe is transported on a road or highway at
night or during the day, accessory lights and
devices should be used for adequate warning to
operators of other vehicles. Give the operator s
manual to the customer and explain al! operating
adjustments. To the best of my knowledge, this
machine has been delivered ready for field use
and the customer has been fully informed as to
proper care and operation.
PREDELIVERY CHECK LIST The following check list
is a reminder of points to inspect. Check off
each item as it is found satisfactory or after
proper adjustment is made. 0 Lubricate all
lubrication points. See pages 24 and 25. C Check
to be sure that all bolts are tight and all
cotter pins are spread. See torque chart on page
31. O Paint all unpaintea bolts ana nuts and any
parts scratched in shipment. O Check hydraulic
system to De sure that all compo- nents are
tight. IMPORTANT If backhoe is used with
tractor equipped with pump having more than 15
gallons per minute (56.8 L per minute) capacity,
be sure to operate the tractor at less than 1800
rpm. If tractor Selective Control Valve is
used, insert backhoe hoses securely into
breakaway coupler. Operate backhoe. If backhoe
does not operate as illustrated on control lever
decal, the hydraulic hoses are not connected
correctly. See page 59. T This backhoe has been
tested and, to the best of my knowledge, is ready
for delivery to the customer.

Safety
OPERATE BACKHOE SAFELT To prevent instability
before attaching or detaching, be sure boom and
dipperstick are extended and bucket is on the
ground. Operate backhoe only from backhoe
operator's seat. Lower stabilizers and bucket to
ground before leaving operator's seat. Never
allow anyone to work under a raised bucket. Do
not use the backhoe bucket as a battering ram. Do
not dig under the stabilizers. Soft ground or
sandy soil will cave-in. Do not drive near the
edge of a ditch, gully or excava- tion. Be
careful to prevent the unit from tipping sideways
if it strikes an excavation, ditch, or other
irregularity, especially on hillsides. The rate
o1 travel on hillsides and curves should always
be such that there is no danger of tipping. Do
not oil, grease, or adjust the unit while it is
in motion. When digging far to either side and in
close, the bucket may contact the stabilizers and
could cause serious damage. Carry the backhoe low
at all times, especially when working on a
sidehill or backing up an incline. Watch for
overhead wires. Never touch wires with any part
of the backhoe. Be sure bystanders are clear of
the backhoe before towering stabilizers or moving
the boom. Be sure area is clear of underground
obstructions befoie digging.
7
PROTECT AGAINST NOISE Prolonged exposure to loud
noise can cause impair- ment or toss of
hearing. Wear a suitable hearing protective
device such as earmuffs (A) or earplugs (B) to
protect against objec- tionable or uncomfortable
loud noises.
AEarmufts BEar Plugs
AVOID HIGH PRESSURE FLUID LEAKS
Escaping fluid under pressure can have sufficient
force to penetrate the skin, causing serious
injury. Befo e disconnecting fines, be sure to
relieve pressure. Befo e applying pressure, be
sure all connections are tight and that lines,
pipes and hoses are not damaged. Use a piece of
cardboard or wood, rather than your hands, to
search for leaks. If injured by escaping fluid,
see a doctor at once. Serious infection or
reaction can develop if proper medical treatment
is not administered immediately.

  • POSITIONING TRACTOR
  • NOTE. Refer to Assembly for FRONT MOUNTING
    BRACKET assembly instructions,
  • CAUTION The backhoe must not be mounted on
tractors having a horizontal exhaust system.
Exhaust would be emitted too close to the
    operator.
  • Position tractor over backhoe and align backhoe
    probe and front tractor braciet.
  • NOTE. The oil pan protector (bold arrow) may need
to be shortened lor use on some tractor models.

    pres- sure in hydraulic system.
  • IMPORTANT If attaching to tractor equipped with
pump having more than 15 gallons per minute (56.8
L per minute) ca- pacity, be sure to operate the
tractor at less than 1800 rpm. If tractor Se-
lective Control Valve is used, insert backhoe
hoses securely into break- away couplers or
damage to the backhoe valve may result.
  • CONNECTING HYDRAULIC HOSES
  • CAUTION Escaping hydraulic oil under pressure
can have sufficient force to pen- etrate the
skin, causing serious injury. Be- fore connecting
lines, be sure to relieve all preGsure. Before
applying pressure to the system, be sure all
connections are tight and that lines, pipes and
    hoses are not damaged.
  • Hydraulic oil escaping from a very small hole can
be almost invisible. Use a piece of cardboard or
wood, rather than your hands, to search for sus-
    pected leaks.
  • If injured by escaping hydraulic oil, see a
doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can
develop if proper medical treatment is not
    administered mediately.
  • IMPORTANT The pressure port is the top port on
backhoe valve. Pressurizing bottom return valve
port will damage 0- rings in valve or valve
    body.
