Introduction
Read this manual carefully to learn how to
operate and service your machine correctly.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury
or equipment damage.
Warranty on this machine appears on your copy of
the Purchase order which you should have received
from your dealer when making your purchase. This
warranty provides you the assurance that John
Deere will back its products where defects appear
within the warranty period. In some
circumstances, John Deere also provides field
improvements, often without charge to the
customer, even if the product is out of warranty.
This manual should be considered a permanent part
of your machine and should remain with the
machine when you sell it.
Measurements in this manual are U.S. customary
units and their metric equivalents.
Warranty and field improvements are a part of
John Deere's product support program for
customers who operate and maintain their
equipment as described in this manual. Should the
equipment be abused, or modified to change its
performance beyond the original factory
specifications, the warranty will become void and
field improvements may be denied. Setting fuel
delivery above specifications or otherwise
overpower- ing machines will result in such
action.
Right-hand and left-hand sides are determined by
facing in the direction of forward travel.
Write identification numbers in the
Identification Numbers section. Accurately record
all the numbers to help in tracing the machine
should it be stolen. Your dealer also needs these
numbers when you order parts. If this manual is
kept on the machine, also file the identification
numbers in a secure place off the machine.
The tire manufacturer's warranty supplied with
your machine may not apply outside the U.S.
All information, illustrations and specifications
in this manual are based on the latest product
information available at the lime of publication.
The right is reserved to make changes at any time
without notice. 8A9N38496 N0199SOA - I FC 2

Introduction
A MESSAGE TO OUR CUSTOMERS We appreciate the
confidence placed in us by your purchase of this
machine. Before this machine was brought to
market, countless hours were spent designing and
testing to ensure that its performance would be
at the highest level. To achieve maximum
performance, it is imperative this machine be
operated in accordance with the procedures
outlined in this manual. Information in this
manual is divided into sections. These sections
are identified at the top of each page. Specific
information within each section is organized into
modules. These modules are encased in boxes with
principle modules identified with a heading at
the top left side of the box. Two-part page
numbers identify both the section and page of
that section. By reviewing this manual often, one
will quickly learn which section to go to for
specific information. For instance, doffer
adjustment would be found in the Picking Unit
section, lubrication intervals in the Lube and
Maintenance section, operators controls in the
Operator's Station section, etc. A detailed Table
of Contents is found immediately behind this
page, and an Index is provided at the back of the
manual. As a quick reference, individual sections
are listed below. Thanks again for purchasing
this machine.

of inspections on the tag which comes with the
extinguisher instruction booklet.
PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES Be prepared if a fire
staM. Keep a first aid kit and fire
extinguishers handy. Keep emergency numbers for
doctors, ambulance service, hospital, and fire
department near your telephone.
HANDLE STARTING FLUID SAFELY Starting fluid is
highly flammable. Keep all sparks and flame away
when using it. To prevent accidental discharge
when storing the pressurized can, keep the cap on
the container, and store in a cool, protected
location. Do not incinerate or puncture a
starting fluid container.
PREVENT BATTERY EXPLOSIONS Battery gas can
explode. Keep sparks and flames away from
batteries. Use a flashlight to check battery
electrolyte level. Never check battery charge by
placing a metal object across the posts. Use a
voltmeter or hydrometer. Always remove grounded
(-) battery clamp first and replace it last.
15
  • AVOID ACID BURNS
  • Sulfuric acid in battery electrolyte is
poisonous. It is strong enough to burn skin, eat
holes in clothing, and cause blindness if
    splashed into eyes.
  • Avoid the hazard by
  • Filling batteries in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wearing eye protection and rubber gloves.
  • Avoiding breathing fumes when electrolyte is
    added.
  • Avoiding spilling or dripping electrolyte.
  • If you spill acid on yourself
  • Flush your skin with water.
  • Apply baking soda or lime to help neutralize the
    acid.
  • Flush your eyes with water for 10-15 minutes. Get
    medical attention immediately.
  • If acid is swallowed.
  • 1, Drink large amounts of water or milk.
  • Then drink milk of magnesia, beaten eggs, or
    vegetable
  • Get medical attention immediately.

PROTECT AGAINST NOISE Prolonged exposure to loud
noise can cause impairment or loss of
hearing. Wear a suitable hearing protective
device such as earmuffs (A) or earplugs (B) to
protect against objectionable or uncomfortable
loud noises.
WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Wear fairly tight
clothing . and safety equipment.

Safety
AVOID CONTACT WITH MOVING PARTS Shut off engine
and remove key before unplugging units. Keep
hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts.
TRANSPORT SAFELY DO NOT transport without first
raising the picking units. When driving on a
road or highway at night or during the day, use
necessary lights and devices for adequate warning
to operators of other vehicles. In this regard,
check local governmental regulations. Various
safety lights and devices are available from your
John Deere dealer. Check clearance before
driving under electric wires, bridges, or through
doorways. Know the height and width of the
picker. FOLD RADIO ANTENNA DOWN. DO NOT fail to
latch the brakes together. Stop slowly to avoid
nose-diving". Keep the SMV emblem and
reflectors clean and in place. 8A9N8s275 F1

PRACTICE SAFE MAINTENANCE Unauthorized
modifications to the machine may impair the
function and/or safety and affect machine
life. DO NOT oil or adjust picker when it is in
motion. Fully extend unit lift cylinders (A) and
place safety stops (B) over rods, when working
under units. DO NOT check the water level in a
hot radiator by removing cap. Check overflow
tank. Shut off engine and remove key when
working on picker unless specifically told to
leave engine running. Replace any guards and
shields removed for servicing. When engine is
running, always use access hole in cab floor to
adjust main hydraulic control valve. DO NOT
attempt to remove an obstruction unless units are
disengaged, gear shift is in park, ignition is
off and switch key is removed.

AVOID HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDS Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Relieve pressure before disconnect- ing
hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections
before applying pressure. Keep hands and body
away from pinholes and nozzles which eject fluids
under high pressure. Use a piece of cardboard or
paper to search for leaks. If ANY fluid is
injected into the skin it must be surgically
removed within a few hours by a doctor familiar
with this type injury or gangrene may result.

SERVICE TIRES SAFELY Failure to follow proper
procedures when mounting a tire on a wheel or rim
can produce an explosion which may result in
serious injury or death. Do not attempt to mount
a tire unless you have the proper equipment and
experience to perform the job. Have it done by
your John Deere dealer or a qualified tire repair
service. When sealing tire beads on rims, never
exceed 35 psi (241 kPa) (2.4 bar) or maximum
inflation pressures specified by tire
manufacturers for mounting tires. Inflation
beyond this maximum pressure may break the bead,
or even the rim, with dangerous explosive force.
If both beads are not seated when the maximum
recommended pressure is reached, deflate,
reposition tire, relubricate bead and
reinflate. AUse a Safety Cage if
Available. Do Not Stand Over Tire. Use a Clip-on
Chuck and Extension Hose. AB6T5 Z23 053Tf RE
