To the Purchaser
This new culti-planter was carefully designed and
manufactured to give years of dependable service.
To keep it running efficiently, read the
instructions in this operator's manual. Each
section is clearly identified so you can easily
find the information you need - whether it is
operation, lubrication, or adjustments and
service. Read the Table of Contents to learn
where each section is located. In addition to the
equipment furnished with your culti-planter,
attachments are available to help you do a better
job in special crop conditions. These are
described in the attachments sections of this
manual and can be purchased from your John Deere
dealer. Right-hand and left-hand sides are
determined by facing in the dir ection the
culti-planter will travel when in use.
Record your culti-planter serial numbers in the
space provided on page 48. Your dealer needs this
information to give you prompt, efficient service
when you order parts or attach ments. If your
culti-planter requires replacement parts, go te
your John Deere dealer wh ere you can obtain
genuine John Deere parts - accept no
substitutes. The warranty on this culti-planter
appears on your copy of the purchase order which
you should have received from your dealer when
you purchased the culti-planter. This safety
alert symbol identifies important safety messages
in this manual. When you see this symbol, be
alert to the possibility of personal inju- ry and

Operation
PREPARING THE TRACTOR Prepare the tractor as
outlined in your C-11 Opera- tor's Manual. Front
End Weights Front end stability is necessary for
efficient opera- tion and safety. Therefore, it
is important that weight be added to the front
end of the tractor according to the following
recommendations. I nsecticide and herbicide
attach ments may be used onIy with certain
tractors as indicated in the chart below. The
Quik-Coupler may be used with the 4520, 4620 and
5020 Tractors only.
This manual contains operation and adjusting, Iu-
brication, service, and assem bly instructions
for the planter drive and planter row
units. Refer to your C-11 Field Cultivator
operator's man- ual for complete operating and
assem bly instructions for the field
cultivator. PREPARING THE CULTI-PLANTER Bolts
and Nuts Before starting to work with your new
culti-planter or one which has been stored, check
to see that ztll nuts are tight. Tire
Inflation Check drive wheel tires to be sure they
are inflated to 24 psi. Lubrication Be sure
culti-planter has been lubricated properly. See
pages 18 and 19.

Planting Depth
0 R A C K E T
Planting depth is gauged by the planter press
wheel and not by the depth of the
cultivator. NOT6. When using double-disk
Furrowers, Furrow- ers gauge depth of seed
planter press wheel gauges depth ol furrow.
Each planting unit has a spring which can be ad-
justed to vary the down pressure on the planting
unit. I f the runner tends to ride out of the
ground, raise the planter and move the adjusting
bracket down to the next position. NOTE. Do not
attempt to penettote the plow pen. ln hard soil
conditions, this could cause he cu///-planter
drive wheels fo ra ise otf the ground. Adjust all
planting units so the spring pressure is the same
on each unit. NOTE When operating in the tield,
lo wer fee cu/ti- planter only when the Frac for
is moving forward. This will prevent the plan ter
runners mom clogging in mois I so// conditions.
Planting depth of each unit is determined by the
setting of the depth adjusting cam. To
decrease planting depth, pull out on the
adjusting stop and ro- tate depth adjusting
cam clockwise. To increase planting depth,
pull out on ad justing stop and rotate depth
adjusting cam counterclock'w ise. Each ho\e
represents a change of approximately 3/8 inch
in planting depth. Adjust all units to plant at
the same depth. If necessary, level units with
sleeve adjusting nut an d lock ing nut. Tighten
loc king nut to 150 ft-lbs torque.

gate to the OFF position to c lose the opening in
the hopper bo!tom. NOTE. Be sore fo turn selector

CLEANOUT PLATE
C L EAN 0 U T S L 0 T
I f seed hoppers are not empty, be certain to
turn the selector gates to the OFF position or
seed will escape from hopper through cleanout
hole. Remove inspection plug and check fingers
periodi- cally. See SERV I GE section, pages
20-22. For best op erat ion , r emo ve clean out
plate and clean out finger pickup housing after
each day's use.
Be certain the CLEANOUT SLOT on the underside of
the finger pickup housing is not clogged. This
will help prevent a buildup of dust and chaff
inside the mechanism.
To plant corn with the finger pickup section of
the planter, move the selector gate from the OFF
position in a clockwise direction until it locks
in place in the position marked GORN.
NOTE The planting units must always be covered
with waterproof material at night or during wet
weath- er.
Selector Gate The selector gate has three
positions mar ked as follows OFF, BEANS SORG
HUM, and CO RN.
To plant soybeans, maize, or other small grain
with the precision feed cup section of the
planter, move the selector gate from OF F
position in a counter- clockwise direction until
it Doc ks in place in the posi- tion marked BEANS
SORG HUM. For instructions on using precision

guide must be used as shown for planting soybeans
or sorgh um. The same precision feed cup is used

When planting with the precision feed cup, disen-
gage the finger pic kup by removing cap screws
A." This allows the finger pic kup drive
sprocket to idle. Select the appropriate chart
and determine desired pounds per acre. The
sprocket combinations in the chart refer to the
stabilizer wheel driver sproc kets, NOT the
sprockets on the planting units.
