Operation
Lubrication Be sure plow has been properly
lubricated. See Lubric ation Charts on pages 31
and 32.
  • IMPORTANCE OF PROPER ADJUSTMENT
  • Your new plow is fully adjus table and. when
proper- ly adjusted to operate in the type of
soil and fiel d con- ditions on your farm, it
will do a good job of plowing at a minimum of
expense. A well-adj usted plow puIls lighter its
furrow slices are uniform in width and depth
it covers trash it leaves the soil in proper
con- dition to be worked down into the best-type
    soedbed.
  • Improper adjustment result s in rapid wear
and possi ble breakage of parts, and ineff icient
    operation.
  • PREPARING THE PLOW
  • Plow Bottoms
  • The polished surfaces of the plow bottoms have
been painted with protective black paint.
  • in most cases it is not necessary to remove the
blac k paint because it will wear off quic kly
upon con- tact with the soil. In those soils
where the black paint will not wear off, remove
    with diesel fuel.
  • I f the plow is not to be used immediately,
protect the polished surfaces by applying a coat
of cup or gun grease. It the plow is to be put in
storage for a consi- derable length of time, see
    page 28.
  • Bolts And Set Screws
  • Before starting to work with a new plow or one
which has been stored, check to see that all
bolts and set screws are tight and all cotter
pins spread to keep them from falling out. Check
the bolts that hold the plow bottoms to see that
    they are drawn up tight.
  • A good practice is to check for loose bolts,
screws, or parts when lubr icating the plow.
Loose bolts are easily lost or cause excessive
wear on parts, resuIting in possi ble damage to
    the plow.

Tire Inflation
I f plow is equipped with rubber-tired rear wheel
s, be sure they are inflated to 36 psi. I f plow
is equipped with a gauge wheel, be sure it is
infIated to 28 psi. PREPARING AND ADJUSTI NG THE
TRACTOR For complete tractor operating
instructions, refer to your tractor oper a1or's
manual. Tire Inflation I nflate the tractor
tires as recommended in the tractor operator's
manual. Tractor Drawbar Remove the dra wbar from
the trac tor. This wilI provide ample room for
the vane cylinder and hoses. Belt Pulley I f
tractor is equipped with a belt pulley, remove
pul- ley.

4 Opera lion
Rear Wheel Weighting Year wheel weights may be
necessary to el iminate excessive wheel slippage
or for stability in rcugh or hills ide fi elds.
However, weights should not h added 1o the point
where all slippage is eliminated. To do so would
hinder maxim um performance of the tractor. The
ideal amount of added weight can be deter- mined
by observing the trac ks of the rear wheels. When
the trac1or is pulling its rated load, the soil
be- tween the tire Iugs should be broken or
shifted. If too much weight has been added, the
thread marks will be clear and distinct. If ioo
little weight has been added, the tread marks
will be entirely obliterated.
Power Shaft Shield (2010, 2510, 2520, 3010, 3020,
4000, 4010, and 4020 Tractors) Wnen using these
plows with a 2010, 251 0, 2520, 3010, 3020, 4000,
4010. or 4020 Tractor, the power- shalt master
s?nieI d must be removed from the tractor.
CAUTION Be sure the PTO guard is in place diii
any time the master shield is removed. Re- place
!he master shield immediately upon removal of the
plow. Be sure the master shield is installed
when- ever the powershaft is used.
Rear Wheel Setting Adj ust rear wheels of th e
trac tor equidistant from th e center line of the
tractor. The distance between the center line of
the tractor and the ins id ol the tire i s
determined by the cut of the plow. Set the rear
wheels according to the f ollow ing chart
Liquid Weight Water and calcium chloride solu
tion is an economi- cal means of adding weight to
rear wheel s. Calc ium chlor ide is recommended
rather than water as it will not freeze. See
your tractor operator s manual or your Joh n
Deere dealer.

Cast- Iron Weights
Where weight in addit ion to or in place of
Iiquid we Ight is required, cast-iron weights can
be bolted to the rear wheels. This type of weigh
I can be secured fro m your John Deere
dealer. For maximum bal last, refer to your
tractor opera- tor's manual. Front End Weighting

manual. Front Wheel Setting Due to wheel tread
limitations, only the 2- or 3-fur- row 14-inch
plows can be used on tractors eouipped with
fixed-tread ront axles. On adjustable front axle
tractors, set front wheels to conform to rear
wheel setting , center-to-center of tread.
For those plow and tractor combinations which re-
quire additional from end weight for transport
stability purposes, add front end weight to
tractor as shown in ch art. Cast iron front end
weights may be secured from you r John Deere

ATTACH ING PLOW TO TRACTOR
Place rock shaft selector lever in the D
position.
Be sure lock pins snap into place.
On tractors equipped with telescoping draft
links, pull up on draft link lock pin and extend
the telescop- ing draft link rearward.
Raise support stand to highest setting.
Before attaching hoses, relieve pressure in
the tractor hydraulic system. To relieve
pressure, stop tractor engine and move remote
cylinder operating lever back and forth several
times.
Slip draft Iink ball sockets over hitch crossbar
pins and lock in place with Quik-Lock pins
provided.
Connect center link to plow mast. Before connect-
ing, it may be necessary to change length of
center link by means of the adjusting handle.
Wipe hose ends to remove any dirt belore
inserting in the break-away couplers.
The hoses may be inserted in either coupler.
Reversing the hoses only reverses the operating
lever operation.
Close the telescoping draft Iinks either by
raising or lowering the plow with the roc kshaft
control lever or bybacking up the tractor.

links are set at the recommend - ed length shown
on page 7. For most plowing conditions, set the
roc kshaft sel ec tor lever in "LD (middle)
position. I n very Iight draft soil or in
irregular surface conditions , L" posi- tion may
give better performance. IMPORTANT Index Ihe
plow to be sure interfer- ence is not encounlered
between front coulter, bot- tom, and tractor cab
or Roll-Gard. On tractors equipped with a cab,
never open rear windows more than half-way when
using these plows. Place the rockshaft selector
lever in the D" posi - tion. CAUTION Do nol
unhitch plow until support stand is down and
right-hand bottoms are on the ground in the
right-hand plowing position. Detach the hoses
trom the break-away couplers on the
tractor. Disconnect plow from tractor hitch.
