Operation
Dual hydraulic aystem
The tractor must have a dual con- trol front
rockshaft with cables used on both s Ides. The
left-hand rock- shaft lever controls the
left-hand side of the cultivator and the right-
hand lever controls the right-hand side of the
cultivator and the rear rigs. flee your tractor
operator's manual. himttltaneous Iift If It 1s
desired to have the front and rear rigs
operate stmultane- ously, set the tractor
hydraulic sys- tem and front rockshaft for
parallel lift arm operation. Use the
rlght- hand control lever to control the
cultivator. See your tractor oper- ator's
manual. Single hydraulic system Ttie H2- 1
Cultivator on a John Deere 2010 Hi-Crop Tractor
with single hydraulic system 1s controlled by the
rockshaft control lever on the tractor. Moving
the control leve r forward simultaneously raises
both the front and rear rigs while moving the
lever rearward lowers the rigs. See your tractor
operator's manual. Working depth The working
depth or the cultiva- tor is determined by the
position of the hydraulic control levers on the
tractor. Use the adjustable stops on the
hydraulic control lever quadrant to limit the
working depth. Tractor tire inflation Refer to
your tractor ope razora manual for operating
tnstructlons on tractor tire inflation pressures.
ROW KSHAFT CONTROL LEvEns
ADJUSTABLE STOPS
The H2- 1 Cultivator is controlled by the
rockshaft control levers on the 2010 Hi-Crop
Tractor. Delayed rear rig lift To operate the
front rigs together, but tndependent of the rear
rig, set the tractor hydraulic system for In-
dependent lift arm operation. Only the 1eTt-hand
cable should be used from the rear rockshaft to
the front rockshaft. Set the two stdes of the
front rockshaft for parallel op- eration. The
left-hand rockshalt control lever controls the
front rigs and the right-hand lever controls
the rear rig.
Selective lift To operate the front rigs Inde-
pendent of each other, set the tractor hydraulic
system and front rock- shalt for independent
split lift arm operation.

Tilting rig pipes
In order to do a good job of culti- vating, it is
important that the front frames of your
cultivator be level.
To check, stand in front of the tractor and
sight along the cultiva- tor frame bar. If the
frame 1s not level, adjust the turnbuckles on
the truss rods until the frame bar is level with
the tractor rear axle. Be sure to lock the
turnbuckles in place wlth the lock nuts when the
cultivator is level.
IG PIPES
Each rig pipe can be tilted up or down at A" so
all rig pipes will be level. The rlg pipes
should be about 1/4-inch higher in front so
they will run level whlle cultivating. Sight
across the rig pipes from the side of the
cultivator to see that they are the same height
and are tilted the same amount.
10
apezation I
Height of lift of front rigs Adjustments are
provided on the cultivator lift rOd and rig lift
rods to UPPER
secure the correct height of lift. if necessary
make these adjustments on the cultivator as
described below.
?ULLAR

ODS LowEn DOLLARS
To set the rig llft rode for the highest
possible lift, make sure the cultivator 1s In the
fully raised posi- tion. Then raise the rig plpes
by hand to the desired hetght and set the upper
collars down against the swive1s.
On tDth sides of the tractor, set the distance at
"A" (from the end of the llft rod to the clamp)
at approxi- mately 4-1/2 Inches.
Adjusting down pressure To adJust for down
pressure on the front rlg sweeps or shovels,
raise the cultivator. Increase down pressure by
raising the lower collars on the rlg 11ft
rods. If no down pressure is deslred, loosen the
lower collars on the rtg lift rods and let them
slide down to the bottom of the rod and tighten
tn place. Even though depth of operatlon 1s
controlled by the hydraulic control levers on the
tractor, proper down pressure is deslrable where
the soil ts hard and doesn't allow for proper
sweep penetration.
To check thls distance, raise the cultivator
slowly. Make sure the rig pipes do not strlke
the lower rig llnks. If they do strike , loosen
all the upper collars on the rtg lift rods, Then,
continue to raise the cultl- vator. Make sure
the cultlvator lift arm does not rotate too far
forward. Also, tn lowering the cultivator,
make sure the lift arm does not rotate too rar
rearward.
II the llft arm is rotating too far forwar d,
shorten the distance at "A." lf the llft arm
ts rotating too far rearward, lengthen the
distance at 'A. '

Simultaneous lift To set the working depth ot
the rear rigs when the cultivator is set for
aimultaneous lift, lower the rear rigs to the
floor after the working depth of the front rigs
has been set.
Independent lift To set the working depth ot the
rear rigs when the cultivator is set for
independent lift, move the tractor rockshaft
control leve r down until the rear rig sweeps
touch the floor.
Push the upper collars down next to the llft
shaft bracket on the rear rig lift rods to secure
the desired working depth for the rear rigs.
Then pull the lever just a little bit more. Now
set the upper collars down next to the lift
shaft bracket. There should be approximately two
tnches from the top of the collar to the top of
the rear rig lift rod.
Down pressure The amount of down pressure on the
rear rlg sweeps or shovels is determined by the
location of the low- er collars on the rear rig
lift rods. Adjust them to secure the desired
penetration of the sweeps.

RIG CLAMP ADJUST NG CpOSSABM
The clamp end of the croaaar m is 3/9- inch
longer on one side than on the other. The c
rossarm used with atralght ahanks should
ordinarily be installe d so that the longer side
of the clamp end 1s down. Crossarms with offset
shanks on the Inner front pipes should be
installed in the clamp so the longer slde of the
clamp end is up. All crossarms can be set with
the longer slde up to galn more ground clearance
for transporting cultivator.
ADJIJSTING SHANK
VERTICALLY
Loosen nuts holding clamp to rig pipe to turn
clamp so shank will be perpendicular to ground.
Tighten nuts after setting. Loosen nuts on
bolts holding crossarm to move crossarm in or
out to meet the crop condition. After setting,
tighten nuts. For vertlcal ad- justment, loosen
nuts on bolts holding shanks to crossarm and
level sweeps so all sweeps penetrate the aoil to
the same depth.

ADJUSTING SPRING TRIF
Additional adjustment, if re- quired, may be
obtained with the set screw. This setting is
made at the fac- tory and the adjustment rarely
re- quires changing. One-half turn of the set
screw makes a big difference In the action of the
trip. To make the trip hold tighter, turn the set
screw out to make the trip release more easily,
turn the set screw in.
Keep your cultivator a John Deere Cultiva
tor Genuine John Deere shovels and sweeps have
more and better ma- terial in points and
wearing surfaces.
Opi ck-id t u str ri g âpriii g grip
Trip each spring trip before using cultivator to
be sure it functions properly. The tensIon of
the spring trips may be adjusted at the rear of
the spring.
They fit better, stay sharp longer, and save
you money. Buy your shovels and sweeps from
your John Deere dealer.
Keeping your equipment in proper adjustment
will help to keep it operating efficiently and
economically.

Safety suggestions Be sure that clothing
worn by tractor or machine operator is fairly
tight and belted. Loose jackets, skirts,
shirts, or sleeves should not be permitted
because of the danger of getting into moving
parts. All women operators should wear trousers
or slacks.
Always keep tractor in gear when going down steep
grades. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel at
all times when the speed 1s increased.
ltr. Careful, Mr. Careless
The safety of the operator is one of the prime
considerations In the minds of John Deere
engineers when designing f a r m i n g equipment.
Shielding, simple adjustments , and other safety
features are built into machines whenever
possible. However, investigation of thou- sands
of farm accidents shows that careless use of
farm machinery causes nearly 1/3 of all farm
acci- dents. You can make your farm a safer
place to live and work if you observe the safety
suggestions given below. Study these suggestions
care- fully and insist that they be followed by
those working with you and for you. Always stop
the tractor and lower all units before
lubricating or ad- justing the cultivator. Never
ride or allow others to ride on the cultivator or
the tractor. The tractor operator should be the
only person on the tractor while it is being
operated. Drive at speeds slow enough to insure
your safety. Reduce speed before turning
quickly or applying individual brakes. Drive
slowly over rough ground.
When transporting the cultivator on a public road
at night, or during other periods of low
visibility, use a warning lamp. When
transporting during the day hang a red flag
prominently on the extreme left of the cultivator.
15
I Z operation Front rig row spacing
The spacing of the front rigs of the H2- 1
Hi-Crop Cultivator can be adjusted to handle rows
spaced 28 to 42 inches when the cultivator 1s
set up for two-row operation. When set up for
one-row operation, the H2- I Hi-Crop Cultivator
can handle rows spaced 54 to 84 inches apart. On
new cultivators from the fac- tory, the rigs are
set up to cultivate two 36-Inch rows as shown
below. Spacing on both right- and left- hand rigs
should be the same whether the cultivator is set
for two- or one- row operation. For rear rig row
spacing adjust- ment, see page 13. For the
one-row front rig row spacing chart, see page 15.
Setting rig hangers and crossarm clamps
  • To change the row spacing of the cultivator from
the factory set- ting, first move the rig hangers
    to the new position.
  • If not already in place , move the front
crossarms agalnst the front side of the hanger
    coupllng plate.
  • Stagger the second row of croasarm clamps
behind the cou- pling plate as illustrated, if
    not al- ready set correctly.
  • Make sure the third row of
  • crossarm clamps is on the rear of the rig pipes
    as shown.
  • Heset the crossarms for the desired row spacing.
