T0 T H E P U R C H A S E R This manual covers the
operation, service and assembly instructions for
the J hn Deere Models L and M two-wheel and
four-wheel spreaders, respectively. These
spreaders have been designed to give many years
of satisfactory service and are especially
built to withstand the abuse of mechanical
loading. The successful operation of your
spreader depends of course upon the care given it
and how it is operated. The first recommendation
is that you read this manual carefully and follow
the instructions. By so doing you may save much
time and expense in the field. If additional
information is needed, aee your J hn Deere
dealer. Lubrication is very tmportant. Follow our
recommendations. If your spreader is the
tractor-drawn Model L it ie important that you
have the correct drawbar hitch on your tractor.
Read the portion of the manual pertaining to
Tractor Hitches and follow the i4pitructione
therein to secure safe and eihcient operation in
the field. When in need of parts refer to the
Parte List and Illustrations. See your John Deere
dealer and give him the part number and a
complete de- scription of the part. LOCATION

DESCRIPTION The John Deere Model L Spreader
is a two-wheel, steel-reinforced wood box
spreader. Its primary function is to spread
manure while being drawn behind a tractor. The
screw-type stand on the hitch frame raises or
lowers the spreader to correct height for
attachin g to tractor drawbar. Special drawbars
are provided for use with various makes of
tractors when needed. These drawbars provide
safety to the operator and better opera- tion of
the spreader in the field. The John Deere Model
M Spreader is a four-wheel, steel-reinforced
wood box spreader with a tractor stub pole and
long levers for tractor op- eration. If the
spreader is to be horse drawn, a seat, steel
pole, eveners and short levers are supplied. From
the widespread to the front sheet both spreaders
are identical in construction. The difference
between the two- and four-wheel spreaders js in
the front sheet, front frame and levers at the
front end. The spreader body is so designed that
it can easily be assembled to make either an L
or an M type spreader. SPECIFICATIONS

T R TRACTOR HITCH
To insure stability of any tractor when pulling a
John Deere Model "L" Spreader, adjust the drawbar
as near to 9-1 /2 inches off the ground as
possible. Hitch the spreader as close to the
rear axle as possible. Most lightweight tractors
also need extra bracing to their drawbars in
order to carry the load of a trailer spreader. No
special tractor hitch or drawbar is needed on
John Deere "1010," "2010," "3010," "4010,"
"3020," "4020," "430," "630," "730,"
"420," "620," 720, "40i" "60," "70," "A," "D,"
"G," "R," and "AO" or "AR" (Serial No. 272,000
and Up) Tractors, For all other John Deere
Tractors and several competitive tractors,
special hitches or drawbars are available from
your John Deere dealer, These are listed on page
16. STEEL WHEEL TRACTORS All steel-wheeled
tractors should use the same drawbar adjustment
or equipment as for rubber-tired tractors. yohn
Deere Tractors "A," "B," "H" and "G," on steel
wheels should have a pair of A1826R (100 lbs.
each) front wheel weights. TRACTOR FRONT END
WEIGHTS GAellneral-Purpose Type Tractors should
be equipped with enough front wheel weights to
provide stability over rough terrain. TRACTOR

easy reach of the operator. B E F O R0E L A D I N

Operate your new spreader to limber it up and see
that it is working properly. Before loading the
spreader in freezing weather make sure that apron
is not frozen to the bed. Always be sure that
feed lever is in out-of-feed posi- tion (in upper
notch) before you start to load spreader. This
will prevent load from jamming again at beaters
on the way to the field.

L O A D I N G S P R E A D E R Never load spreader
higher than the arch pipe. Before starting to
field, turn the beaters over by hand and the
spreader will start easier when unloading. This
will also prevent manure from spill- ing on the
road and throwing out a large bunch when starting
to spread. U N L O A D I N G S P R E A D E
R Always atop your tractor before throwing the
beaters in gear- If load has become jammed
against beaters do not force lever into out-
of-feed position. Instead, move the spreader
forward slowly, raising the lever at the same
time, so that the feed mechanism will assist in
reposition- ing the lever. After the beaters have
started, shift the feed lever into the notch you
wish to spread. To prevent excessive driving to
unload the last part of the load, you can stop
the beaters and leave the feed engaged until the
spreader is empty.
