To the purchaser Keep this manual in a convenient
place for quick and easy reference. Study it
carefully. You have pur- chased a dependable and
sturdy im- plement, but only by proper care and
operation can you expect to reee ive the
service and long life des igned and built into
it. Give your cultivator proper at- tention
during slack periods. By do- ing this , it
will always be ready, without delay, when you
need it.
Sometime in the future, your cul- tivator may
need new parts to re- place those that are worn
or broken. If so, go to your John Deere dealer.
Provide him with the model number of your
cultivator and the date pur- chased. Record
this information in the space provided below,
so it will be readily accessible when it is
needed.
This manual contains valuable in- formation about
your new John Deere Row-Crop Cultivator. It
has been carefully prepared and illustr ated.
In it, you will find instructions and helpful
suggestions for operating, adjusting,
attaching, transporting, lubricating and
servie ing your cul- tivator. You will also
find instruc- tions for adapting your cultivator
to work properly in all types of field
cultivation.
Location references Right-hand and left-hand
refer- ences are determined by standing at the
rear of the cultivator and facing in the
direction of travel.
Your new cultivator was built to rigid
manufacturing standards. Ma- terial and
workmanship are the best. Preeis ion production
methods and accurately controlled
heat-treating assure maximum strength and long
life for every part.

Release center link and attach to hitch mast.
Lengthen or shorten center link for easier
attaching. To replace lock pins in draft links,
raise eultivato r and allow cultivator weight to
telescope draft links to operating position.
Place cultivator on level surface. Back tractor
until draft links almost line up with ends of
hitch pins.
Attach left-hand draft link first. Insert pin
and lock. Attach right- hand link in the same
manner. Turn leveling screw if necessary to line
up draft links with hitch pins. Lift lock pins
and extend telescoping draft llnk shafts to
make connection easier.
To detach cultivator from trac- tor, lower
cultivator on level sur- face. Remove center
link, then draft links.

Detaching cultivator
To detach cultivator from trac- tor, lower
cultivator on a level sur- face, push down on
spring-loaded latches and lock them in the
released position. Lower the 3-point hitch.
Lower 3-point hitch so upper jaw will pass under
spacer between cul- tivator hitch mast plates
and lower jaws will slip under cultivator hitch
pins.
Guide rod
Back the tractor until the three jaws are under
their respective hitch points and raise hitch.
The lower jaws automatically lock in place if
the levers are in the up position be- fore
attaching the quik-coupler to the cultivator.
GUI DE ROD
NOTE When the sp ning-loaded latches are
properl y locbed, the in- dicator rod will
protrude through the slot in the coupler ftame
adja- cent to the latch rods.
Attach guide rod and bracket to tractor as shown.
16
operation 1 3 Leveling cultivator frame
The cultivator works best when the frame is
level and the hitch mast is perpendi cular to
the ground. The bottom of the frame should be ap-
proxi mately 28 inches from the ground when
cultivating.
On 1010 Tractor, screw left-hand lift link up
short and level culti- vator by adjusting
right-hand lift link.
Turn the adjusting arm on the center link
until the hitch mast is pe rpendieular with
the ground when cultivating.
Be sure cultivator frame always stops about 28
Inches from the ground when lowe red for
cultivation. This will give the rtgs space to
move and provide adequate crop clearance. See '
Control Lever,' ' page 11.
To level the cultivator frame, turn the
adjusting crank on each lift link until both ends
of the frame are the same helght above the floor
or ground.

Position the rig ptpes and tighten the bolts.
LOWER COLLARS
So rigs tloat with level of ground leave one to

rig litt rods and lift arms when cultivating.
Rig movement The rig coupler plates should be
tight enough to eliminate side move - ment, but
loose enough ao rig will tloat with the level of
the ground. Loosen the nut on each pivot stud
and turn the stud to loosen or tight- en the
coupler plates. Be sure to retighten nut on pivot

The erossarms are installed with the short side
of the clamp up when holding straight shanks. The
cross - arms can be installed wi th the long

the ri gs are raised.
STRAICHT SHANK
When cultivating, shanks should De
perpendieular to the ground sweeps should
penetrate the soil to an equal depth and
erossarms should De set correctly for row
spacing and crop condition.
To posttton the shanks, loosen the nuts on top
of the rig clamps and move the crossarm and
shank until the ahank is perpendicular to the
ground. Tighten the nuts atter setting
0FF ET SHAN K
To move the crossarms left or right, loosen the
nuts on the bottom of the rig clamps. See row
spacing diagrams, pages 22-39 for erossarm
location. After positioning the crossar ms,
tighten the nuts.
When used with oftset shanks, the erossarm is
installed with the long side up.
Whereve r offset shanks are used on the cultivato
r, be sure the otf- set po rtion of the shank
angles in toward the rig pipe as shown
above. IMPORTANT E using spring- tooth
shanks, mWe sure there is elearanee between
spring tooth and erossarm b e h i n d it to
prevent spring-tooth trom hitting crossarin when
an obstruction is eneounte red.
To place the shanks at the s ame level, loosen
nuts on the clamps at the end of the erossarms.
Straight shanks should extend 1/2-inch above the
clamps, offset shanks 2 inches above the eIamps.
