TO THE PURCHASER
Precision production methods, and accurately
controlled heat-treating assure maximum strength
and long life for every part. Keep this manual in
a convenient place for quick and easy reference.
Study this manual carefully. You have
purchased a dependable and sturdy implement,
but only by proper care and operation can you
expect to receive the service and long life
designed and built into it. Give your cultivator
proper at- tention during slack periods, and by
doing this it will always be ready, without
delay, when you need it. Sometime in the future,
your cul- tivator may need new parts to re- place
those that are worn or broken. If so, go to your
John Deere dealer. Provide him with the model
num- ber of your cultivator and the date
purchased. Record this information in the space
provided below, so it will be readily accessible
when it is needed.
This manual contains valuable in- formation about
your new John Deere Row-Crop Cultivator. It
has been carefully prepared and illustrated. In
it, you will find instructions and helpful
suggestions for operating, adjusting,
attaching, transporting, lubricating, and
servicing your new cultivator. You will also
find in- structions for adapting your culti-
vator to work properly in all types of field
cultivation. Your new cultivator was built
to rigid manufacturing standards. Ma- terial and
workmanship are the best.
LOCATION RE FERENCES Right-hand and left-hand
refer- ences are determined by standing at the
rear of the cultivator and facing in the
direction of travel.

To operate the front rigs inde- pendently of each
other, set the trac- tor hydraulic system for
independent lift arm operation. The inner lever
controls the left-hand front rigs and the outer
lever controls the right- hand front and rear
rigs. See your tractor operator's manual.
TRACTOR TIRE INFL ATION
Refer to your tractor operator's manual ION
tWCtOr tire inflation pressures.
If ft is desired to have the front and rear rigs
operate simultaneous- ly, set the tractor
hydraulic system for parallel lift arm
operation. Use the right-hand or outer control

LOVER TRUSS ROD BRACKET
To do a good job ot cultivating and to simplify
attaching the cu1ti- vator to the tractor, the
cultivator frame bars should be level. To check
if they are level, stand in front of the tractor
and sight over the cultivator frame bar and under
the tractor rear axle.
from the tractor to raise the outer end of the
frame. To lower the outer end of the frame, move
the upper truss rod bracket toward the
tractor. Be sure to tighten all nuts on the truss
rod brackets securely.

T41 CULTIVATO R If the cultivator frame bars are
not adjusted properly, loosen both truss rod
brackets.
Adjust the lower truss rod brack et on the frame
bar so the cultivator meme is at a right angle to
the frame of the tractor. To move the frame
forward, move the lower truss rod bracket away
from the tractor. To move the frame to the rear,
move the lowe r truss rod bracket toward the
tractor.
TRUSS RODS
Adjust the nuts on the truss rods until the
frames are leveI and par- alIe1 with the rear
tractor axle.
If the frames are not level, move the uppe r

RIGID GAUGE WHEEL CLAMP BOLT
The gauge wheels determine the depth of
cultivation of the rigs on which they are used.
set all gauge wheels to operate at the same depth.
Two types of gauge wheels are a v a i I a b I et
h e caste ring gauge wheels shown below and the
rigid type shown at the right.

SETSCREW CANTERING GAUGE WHEEL
Adjust the rigid gauge wheel for a working depth
of approzimately 1 to 2 inches by loosening the
clamp bolt anQ moving the 9hank to the de- sired
position.
The rigid gauge wheels should be attached so that
the theeIs are under the rig pipes as shown above
and the shanks are positioned to the right and
left of the rig pipes as shown below. Loosen the
set s crew and adjust the cultivating depth by
setting the gsuge heels 1 to 2 inches above
thefloor or ground.

RIG DE PTH STOPS
Rig depth stops control the depth of operatton of
the rigs on which they are used. With the
cultivator resting on a level surface or floor,
there should Jae approximately 1/2- inch
clearance Jaetween the head of the set screw and
the lowe r rig link. ror greater depth of
cultivation, looeen the lock nut and turn the
set screw in. For less depth, turn the set screw
out. Be sure the lock nut is kept tight.
CAUTION Do r\at attempt to raise the cultivator
wlth the etonde In the stor9e Posltlon. TI L
TING FRONT RIGS
STOR AGE STA NDS TNflER wUT
Each rig can Jae tllted up or down so all rig
pipes will be level. The rig pipea should Jae
about 1/4 inch higher in front so they will run
level while cultivating. Sight across the rig
pipes from the side of the cultivator to see that
they are the same height and tilted the same.
COUPLTHG PLTE
Before raising or operating cul- tivator, make
sure the storage standa are fastened behind the
clips against the rig coupling plate as shown
above. Be sure the nut on the clip is tight.
13
10 Opemaman HE IGHT OF LIFT OF FRONT RIGS
To lengthen or shorten the lift pipe,
disconnect it from the cultiva- tor lift arm and
loosen the lock nut. Turn the rod to lengthen or
shorten the 11ft pipe. Secure the setting in
place with the lock nut. When raising the
cultivator for the first time, raise it slowly.
If the cultivator hits the tractor or the rig
pipes hit the rig hangers, loosen the upper
collars on the rig lift rods. Adjust the upper
collar s as instruc- ted below and on page 11
before rais- ing the cultivator again. RIG LIFT
ROOS To set the cultivator for the high- est
possible lift, loosen all the upper collars on
the rig lift rods and raise the cultivator by
using the tractor control leve r. After the
cultivator is fully raised, lift the inside rigs
(No. 1 and 2) by hand until they come in contact
with the tractor. Then secure the up- per collar
down next to the swivel.
Adjustments are provided on the lift pipes and
the rig lift rods to se- cure the correct height
of lift. Make these adjustments as needed. LIFT
PIPE The distance from the front of the lock
nut on the Itft pipe to the center of the
attaching hole in the lift arm should be 14- 1/4
inches. Be gure that the lift arm does not come
in contact with the rear of the frame bar, when
the cultivator rigs are lowe red. However, when
the cultivator is operating in the ground, the
lift pipe should be adjusted so the lift arm
comes wlthin 1/2-inch of the frame

UPPER COLLARS
SWI YEL S
RIG LIFT RODS
Lift the No. 3 and No. 4 rigs on the T21
Cultivator by hand until the rig pipes are
slightly higher than the rig pipes on the inside
rigs. Secure the upper collars down next to the
swivels.
To cheek this setting, lower the cultivator
and then raise it. If addi- tional lift is
desired, lower the out- side upper collars
slightly.
It may be necessary to change this upper
collar setting in the field, depending upon depth
of cultivation. (See page 12. )
On the T41 Cultivator, to set the upper collars
on the rigs equipped with gauge wheels, lift the
rigs by hand until the rig pipe comes in con-
tact with the rig hanger. Secure the upper collar
down next to the swivel.
IMPORTANT Once the upper col- lars are set, be
careful when chang- ing this setting or the
setting of the cultivator lift pipe. Changing one
or both of these settings could cause the
cultivator to damage the tractor when the
cultivator is raised or it could cause the
cultivator not to raise high enough. RIG

I Z Operation F L EX IBIL I TY OF RIGS WITH GAUGE
WHEELS UPPEP COLLARS
LIFT ARMS
LOWER COLLARS
GAUGE WHEELS
The front rigs of the cultivators equipped with
gauge wheels are de- signed to float with the
level of the ground.
To increase the clearance be- tween the upper
collar and lift arm, move the control lever
quadrant stop forward. This causes the
cultivator lift shaft to rotate farther.
When operating in the field, there should be
about 1 inch of clearance between the upper
collars on the rig lift rods and the lift arm.
This will allow the rigs to float.' ' This
clear- ance is controlled by the depth stop on
the tractor roekshaft control quadrant.
If there is more than 1 inch clear- ance, reverse
the above procedure to se cure the clearance
needed.
Remember the depth of cultivation is controlled
by the gauge wheels and the rig depth stops and
not the stop on the control lever quadrant.
