INTRODUCTION This safety alert symbol identifies
important safe- ty messages in this manual. When
you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility
of personal in- jury and carefully read the
message that follows. Your operator's manual
contains SI metric equivalents which follow
immediately after the U.S. customary units of
measure. "Right-hand" and left-hand sides are
determined by facing in the direction the
platform will travel when in use. Record your
platform serial number in the space pro- vided in
SPECIFICATIONS. The warranty on this platform
appears on your copy of the purchase order which
you should have received from your dealer when
making your purchase. This war- ranty provides
you the assurance that John Deere will back its
products where defects appear within the war-
ranty period. In some circumstances, John Deere
also provided field improvements, often without
charge to the customer, even if the product is
out of warranty. Warranty and field improvements
are a part of John Deere's product support
program for customers who operate and maintain
their equipment as described in this manual.
Should the equipment be abused or modi- fied to
change its performance beyond the original fac-
tory specifications, the warranty will become
void and field improvements may be denied.

SAFETY DECALS CAUTION, WARNING OR DANGER
Decals with these headings and symbol indicate
the possibility of personal injury. IMPORTANT
Decals with this heading indicate the possibility
of damage to the machine. Decals are located in
areas where they apply.
AVOID CONTACT WITH MOVING PARTS Keep hands, feet,
and clothing away from powerdriven parts. Never
clean, lubricate, or adjust platform when it is
run- ning.
Never attempt to clear obstructions off cutting
platform unless separator is disengaged and
engine is shut off. Everyone must be clear before
starting engine or run- ning combine.
LEAVING COMBINE UNATTENDED Before leaving the
combine unattended, turn off engine and remove
keys. Support the platform with the hydrau- lic
cylinder safety stop or lower it to the ground.
Place the gearshift lever in neutral and engage
the parking brake. Lock cab doors on 6620,
SideHill 6620, 7720, and 8820 Combines.

Safety 3
OPERATE SAFELY Clothing worn by operator must be
fairly tight and belt- ed. Loose jackets, shirts,
or sleeves must never be worn. Anytime work is
being done under reel or platform, the hydraulic
cylinder safety stops must be placed in the
safety position.
AVOID HIGH PRESSURE FLUIDS Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Relieve pressure before discon- necting
hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections
before applying pressure. Keep hands and body
away from pin holes and nozzles which eject
fluids under high pressure. Use a piece of
cardboard or paper to search for leaks. Do not
use your hand. If ANY fluid is injected into the
skin, it must be surgically removed within a few
hours by a doctor familiar with this type injury
or gangrene may result. Cracking hydraulic line
fittings to lower feeder house will result in an
instantaneous dropping of feeder house or feeder
house and header.
PROTECT AGAINST NOISE Prolonged exposure to loud
noise can cause impairment or loss of
hearing. Wear a suitable hearing protective
device as earmuffs (A) or earplugs (B) to protect
against objectionable or uncomfortable loud
noises.
AEarmuffs BEarplugs
TRANSPORTING SAFELY Check local width laws before
transporting. It is not recommended to transport
on road with 230 Platform attached to combine. It
is recommended that you use a Model 25 Transport
Frame for the 200 Series Platform.

GENERAL INFORMATION
II612 68
H3J 268 DFeeder Conveyor
APickup Reel BCuxerbar The cutting platform
receives the crop and moves it to front of feeder
house by means of the reel, cutterbar, and auger.
Retracting fingers in auger feed material to the
feeder conveyor. IMPORTANT The
variable-belt-drive feeder house is designed for
use with a corn head or row-crop head. Using the
variable- belt-drive when combine is equipped
with a cutting platform can cause vi- bration and
excessive wear to cutter- bar parts. Minimum
feeder house tachometer speed must be kept
between 460 and 470 rpm, 490 to 500 rpm for 8820,
when using a cutting platform. The 4400 and 4420
chain drive feeder house must be kept at 468
using the 18 tooth sprocket.

14 Operating the Platform
FIELD OPERATION Crop Conditions Cultural
practices and machine adjustment can greatly
affect crop losses. For example soyDean loss
levels can be affected by low podding, lodge
resistance character- istics, or harvesting at
low moisture levels. For each crop and ground
condition (i e standing crop, standing with down
heads, down and tangled crops, dry or wet soil,
green and weedy crops) the platform and separator
must be correctly adjusted Different adjustments
can be made to compensate for various tield
conditions. 1. Variable speed teeder house must
operate at 460 rpm for 6620, SideHill 6620, 7720
and 490 rpm for 8820 Combines. Refer to combine
operator's man- ual for adjustment procedure.
18
Operating the Platform 15
  • Soybeans (Flex Platforms)
  • Normal Dry Conditions
  • For normal dry conditions adjust flex platform
per instructions. (See Switch Positioning for
    Ground Condi- tions.)
  • Extremely Dry and Hard Ground Conditions
  • In extremely dry conditions the platform may
climb up and over stilt soybean stubble, missing
    Icw growing Deans.
  • To correct, adjust as follows
  • Lock out cutterbar. (See Locking-Out Flex Cutter-
    bar.)
  • Adjust cutterbar to minimum tilt. (See Cutterbar
    Skici Plate Tilt Adjustment.)
  • Readjust range indicator. (See Adjusting Range
    Indi-
  • cator.)
  • NOTE. Any adjustment to cufferdar tilt requires
    read- justing range indicator.
  1. Maintain maximum pressure on spring (A) and 1/4-
inch (6 mm) clearance between bolt head (B) and
    rear of pivot (C).
  2. Remove and retain all lock out bolts and washers.
  3. Also refer to DIAL-A-MATIC header height control.

ASpring BBolt Head CPivot
  • Wet or Soft Ground Conditions
  • In wet or soft conditions, platform may push or
plow dirt because of excessive ground pressure.
  • Run with DIAL-A-MATIC header height control
switch in position 2 or 3.
  • (Flex Platforms only) Set cutterbar tilt as
recom- mended. (See Cutterbar/Skid Plate Tilt
    Adjustment.)
  • Readjust range indicator. (See Adjusting Range
    Indi- cator.)
  • (Flex Platforms only) Tension cutterbar drive
case support spring to pull up on drive case.
(See Adjust- ing Cutterbar Drive Case Support
    Spring.)

19
16 Operating the Platform
  • Oats, Maize, and Wheat (Flex and Rigid Platforms)
  • NOTE. For instructions on various adjustments
(for example, set cutterbar tilt etc.) see
correct sub heading within this section.
  • Normal Dry Ground Conditions
  • When combining standing crops, such as wheat,
soybeans, o maize, the cutterbar should be ad-
justed to the mid or fully extended position. The
fully extended position is also recommended when
using a bat reel, as in short light crops, to
    sweep" the cutterbar.
  • For maize, sunflowers, etc., it may be necessary
to raise the platform cross auger.
  • Set reel so the slats, in their lowest position,
strike just below the lowest grain heads and
    slightly ahead of the knife.
  • Pickup reel fingers must be set at right angles
    to the cutterbar.
  • 5 Lock out flex cutterbar.
  • The floating divider points on a flex platform
may be too long for use in standing grain crops
    and can be removed.
  • Short, Damp, Green, or Weedy Crops
  • In short, damp, green, or weedy crops, plugging
or slug feeding may occur. Large quantities of
weeds tend to gum up the combine sieves and
    impart moisture to the grain.
  • Weeds m ust be disposed of quickly and not be
broken up any more than necessary.
  • The following suggestions will help while
    operating in weedy conditions.
  • Cut the grain as high as possible.
  • Try to avoid weeds and undergrowth.
  • Check to see that cy1inder is operating at proper
    speed.
  • Use as much air blast on shoe as possible without
    blowing over grain.
  • Make following adjustments to platform
  • 1. Lock out flexible cutterbar except for
soybeans. Move rigid cutterbar to rearward
position for green material or forward lor very
short Straw. On both platforms, tilt cutterbar up
    as far as possible.

Operating the Platform 17
  • 2. If combining soybeans with flexible cutterbar,
ad- just DIAL-A-MATIC header height control to
first position on switch to keep cutterbar as
high as possible and platform bottom as flat as
    possible.
  • 3 Move reel back and down. Adjust pitch of pickup
reel fingers at right angles to the cutterbar.
  • Adjust auger down and back for rigid platforms
and down and forward for flexible platforms.
  • Remove paint, rust, dirt, or crop residue from
the platform bottom under the auger.
  • Remove optional feeder house closure strips. Do
not use strips unless wrapping of feeder conveyor
    drive shaft occurs.
  • To prevent tailings from being thrown down the
feeder house and restricting the flow of material
in the auger finger area, adjust cylinder front
door stripper as close to the cylinder as
    possible. See combine operator's manual.
  • Adjust feeder conveyor drum float to the grain
    position. See combine operator's manual.
  • NOTE Incorrect drum height(drum float adjusted
to the corn position) causes most feeding prob-
    lems.
  • Adjust feeder conveyor chain for the correct
dis- tance above false bottom. See combine
    operator's manual.
  • Adjust feeder conveyor chain speed for grain
crops, by installing drive chain on the LARGER
tooth sprocket. See combine operator's manual.
  • If feeding problems persist, install auger flight
ex- tensions. (See Special Equipment Section.)
  • Short Thin Crops
  • When combining standing crops, as wheat or
soybeans, the cutterbar must be adjusted to the
mid or fully ex- tended position. The fully
extended position is also rec- ommended when
using a bat reel, to sweep the cut- terbar.
  • Auger flight extensions may be needed.
