Title: What is the UK Spouse Visa? Application, Eligibility, Requirements
1What is the UK Spouse Visa?
The UK Spouse Visa, also called the Partner Visa,
allows non-UK citizens to reside in the UK with
their British or settled partner. It falls under
the UK Family visa category and allows holders to
work or study without restrictions. A UK Spouse
Visa is based on an individual's right under
Article 8 of the European Convention of Human
Rights. The UK Spouse Visa permits living,
working, and studying in the UK. It also enables
individuals to apply for Indefinite Leave to
Remain (ILR) and, ultimately, British
citizenship. The spouse seeking entry to the UK
must be granted entry clearance before arrival.
If you apply as a fiancé(e), you will be granted
entry for six months to marry. Following the
marriage, you will need to apply for a Spouse
Visa. The initial Spouse Visa is valid for 33
months if you are applying from outside the UK.
If applying from within the UK, the visa is valid
for 30 months. Extensions are available for a
further two and a half years, bringing the total
stay to five years. After five years, individuals
are eligible to apply for ILR.
