3Basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) is a new
kind of material that is helpful in improving
the strength and durability of concrete. In
fact Basalt Fibre Reinforced Concrete is more
durable than the Glass Fibre Reinforced
Concrete. BFRC is sustainable because basalt is
an abundant raw material and the production
process is environmentally friendly.
4Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Physical Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Color - Basalt Fibre are available in Golden
Brown Color. - Availability Basalt Fibre are available in 6mm,
8mm and 12mm size. - Density Basalt fibre are having density 2.75 gm
per cm3 - Diameter - Typically Basalt fibre have 5.8
micron diameter. - Co-efficient of Friction The co-efficient of
friction varies from 0.40 to 0.50

6Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Chemical Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Basalt Fibre exhibits excellent alkali
resistance. - The weight loss of Basalt Fibre in boiling water
is less. - These fibres exhibits excellent resistant against
acid and salt attack.
7Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Thermal Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Basalt Fibre exhibits excellent thermal
properties as like Glass Fibres. - Basalt Fibre can resist temperature as high as
1200 centigrade to 1300 centigrade easily for a
long duration. - Unstressed Basalt Fibre can maintain their
integrity upto 1250 Centigrade.
8Properties of Basalt Fibre
- Corrosion and Fungi Resistance
- Basalt Fibre shows excellent corrosion resistance
that on which we can rely on. - They dont even undergo corrosion.
- They shows the best resistance against fungi and
bacterial attack.
9- Process of Formation of Basalt Fibre
- Crushed stone
- Loading station
- Transport Station
- Bathe Charging station
- Initial Melting Zone
- Secondary Control Heat Zone
- Filament Form
- Sizing
- Strand Formation
10Applications of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Concrete
- BFRC is used in industrial floors, Airport
Runways, Motor ways, and internal reinforcement - of tunnels and channels.
- Basalt has good electrical and sound insulating
properties. So it could be used in - auditoriams.
- Basalt Composite pipes could be used in
transporting corrosive liquids.
11- Advantages of the Basalt Fibre Reinforced
Concrete - Reduces the width of cracks
- We can make even thinner elements of concrete
which is not possible in case of RCC. - We can mix Fibres with other constituents of
concrete. - Maintenance will be easy as the concrete has
longer durability. - Basalt fibre is immune to galvanic erosion unlike
to Steel Rebar reinforcement.
12- Technical Advantages of use of Basalt Fibre as
Reinforcement - Low level of Micro Cracks (up to 90)
- Increases Flexural Strength (Up to 35)
- Increases Concrete Fatigue Strength and
Resistance (Up to 40) - Increases the Frost Resistance (up to 35)
- Increases Water Tightness (up to 50)
- Increases surface endurance of concrete (up to
70) - Decreases the slivering of Corners and Edges (Up
to 90)
13- Conclusion-
- The adoption of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Concrete
is finding its place in construction industry - Slowly but steady place.
- At present the main challenge for Basalt Fibre
Reinforced Concrete is its cost. - The manufacturing is not at scale and price is
also high. - The failure of Concrete element reinforced with
Basalt Fibre is ductile even when loading under - Compressive, shear, or bending loads.
- Basalt Fibre Reinforced Concrete has potential to
be prominent solution where concrete faces - Severe exposure.
- We can also conclude that Basalt Fibre has
advantage over Glass Fibre as reinforcement.
