A History Of Tequila

Making of Tequila
Making Tequila is done with Agave. It may take
the agave plants eight or twelve years to reach a
maturity that allows them to be harvested and
used to make tequila. The huge base of the plant
is exposed after removing the pointy leaves, and
the starches then roasts or steams to produce
fermentable sugars. Chopped plants are
uniform-sized pieces, then baked for 79 hours.
These are ground plants and the pulp separated
from the juice using a big stone.

What About a Worm?
The worm in the tequila bottle is a myth, to
start with. In the 1940s and 1950s, it was a
marketing gimmick intended to increase the brand
of drinks popularity among Americans. But some
mezcal bottles have a worm in the bottom. The
worms in mezcal are larvae of moths, and the
diversity of maguey succulents used in its
preparation are what give it its distinctive
flavor.
