Lepakshi is a village in the Anantapur District
of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located
approximately 120 kilometers north of Bangalore.
Lepakshi is culturally and archaeologically
significant as it is the location of shrines
dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Virabhadra which
were built 13361646. Mythology states that
Lepakshi is the place where Jatayu fell, wounded
by Ravana. Rama is said to have commanded the
bird to rise Le Pakshi (literally "Get up,
Bird" in Telugu), and hence the name

For me the wingless Jatayu has always
symbolized the damage caused to nature, says the
sculptor and film director of international
repute.More so when we consider that Jatayu
got hurt trying to save a woman. For a woman is
ultimately nature itself, he explained.

Jatayu also represents a bygone era when humans,
animals, birds and other living forms cared for
each other and fellow begins and lived peacefully
on this Earth. In the words of Mr Rajiv Anchal,
this symbolism has great relevance in todays
