Title: Birds 10 Eco Art Parade
110
255 sculptures of Bonelli's eagles participated at
the exhibition Eco-Art-Parade 2009 in Monaco,
inaugurated by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco on
6th June 2009. The theme of the exhibition was
Ecology and Environment and its effigy was the
Bonelli Eagle, threatened by extinction in the
mediterranean region. The eagles were
exhibited in the various public gardens of the
Principality until October 2009 when they were be
sold in auction by Sothebys. Entries came from a
diverse range of artists, from the very well
known to schools Eco Arts 2009 auction, with
more than 500 participants, raised 1 million. A
significant amount of this is helping to
repopulate the Bonelli Eagle and other endangered
species throughout the Mediterranean. Each artist
or group taking part was provided with an
identical white model of an eagle (three
different positions standing, hovering and
taking flight) which they then modified to raise
awareness of the plight of Bonelli's Eagle in
whatever way they saw fit.
3The Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) is a large
bird of prey. Dependent on the Mediterranean
region, it is one of the most endangered birds of
prey in Europe. The species' declines are due to
widespread habitat destruction, electrocution
from electricity pylons as well as persistent
persecution.

43One wing of the Bonelli Eagle shows the beautiful
nature the tropical Amazonas forest, arctic ice
fields, the coral banks, the continents of
Australia and Africa, each with its
characteristic animals and vegetation, a water
fall and a crisp mountain lake. On the other wing
the nature catastrophies mainly caused by human
beings capture our attention the deforestation,
the melting of the glaciers, pollusion of the
sea, a volcano outbreak, an earthquake, un
tornado, flooding and tsunami. On this
side traumatic for nature the eagle cries by
asking Why?

47The bird connected to the four elements takes
off leaning on the Earth, hovers in the Air, Fire
gives it light and Water is its source of
life. The emblematic bird, symbol of peace,
freedom, messenger of our history, weaves an
invisible link between humans and nature. A work
of art in itself, the bird like the thought, is
free to travel without borders. Carried by this
universal symbolism, the unifying message of Eco
Art International is above all that of
solidarity. The Eco Art Parade initiative is an
expression of this.
