Title: Malta 24 Golden Bay
1Malta
24
2Golden Bay is located on the Northwest coast of
Malta, right next to Ghajn Tuffieha and is a
popularly visited beach which was one of the
first to earn Blue Flag status. Ghajn Tuffieha is
an area in the north west coastline at the end of
the fertile valley which extends for five
kilometres from St. Paul's Bay. A small headland
splits the sea in the middle to create two fairly
large sandy beaches, viz Golden Sands and Ghajn
Tuffieha Bay. GOLDEN SANDS is the most frequented
beach next to Mellieha Bay. Its large stretch of
tawny sand attracts thousands in search of
company, sea and sun. The big, modern hotel
towering over the bay has a small beach
concession from which it provides facilities for
sunbathing and for aquatic sports
3Golden Bay forms part of the Manikata village
which is part of Mellieha. Easily accessible and
reachable with public transport, this beach
offers plenty of amenities and is the perfect
location for families to enjoy some sunbathing

7Agave americana, commonly known as American agave
is a large, rhizomatous succulent that grows in a
wide range of conditions including cliffs, urban
areas, woodlands, grasslands, riparian zones,
beaches and sandy areas, and rocky slopes. It is
tolerant of wind, salt, high temperatures, and
extreme drought. It can grow in shallow, very
dry, low fertility soil and can colonize bare
sand
8Native to Mexico and the southern United States,
American agave has been introduced widely as an
ornamental, for medicinal and agricultural
purposes. On the island of Malta, Cape fig
(Carpobrotus edulis), prickly pear (Opuntia
ficus-indica) and American agave compete with and
replace the Critically Endangered (CR) National
Plant of Malta, the Maltese Rock-centaury
(Cheirolophus crassifolius) and the CR Maltase
Cliff-orache (Cremnophyton lanfrancoi)
9Control of the American agave is mainly achieved
by using a combination of physical and chemical
management techniques. Small plants are usually
removed manually, while larger plants can be
treated manually and/or with herbicide

lies down a slope and can only be reached by a
flight of steps
36Marsaskala, sometimes spelt Marsascala (M'Scala),
is a sea-side village in the South Eastern Region
of Malta that has grown around the small harbour
at the head of Marsaskala Bay, a long narrow
inlet also known as Marsaskala Creek
37Marsascala is the closest port to the Grand
Harbour and has always been Malta's secondary
port. In Roman times, Marsascala was a
significant port with many ancient shipwrecks
located around the bays of Marsascala and St.
Thomas

41Colourful fishing and sailing boats, riding on
the clear water, enhance the cheerful aspect of
the bay. Coastal bathing is widespread and the
bay is full of popular restaurants and bars.
Marsascala is now the biggest and most popular
resort in the South
42ST. THOMAS BAY, near Marsascala, is a largish bay
with small sandy banks and shallow water making
it a terrific spot for bathing and snorkelling.
Like Marsascala, it is fast growing into a
seaside resort
