What Is Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy
Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy refers to a
type of cerebral palsy that affects both the
upper and lower limbs on one side of the body. It
is a form of spastic cerebral palsy where muscle
groups on one side experience movement
limitations. This condition, caused by a stroke,
impacts muscle control in the face, arm, and leg
on the affected side, leading to difficulties in
movement and coordination.

Types Of
Spastic Hemiplegia
There are different types of Spastic Hemiplegia,
including facial hemiplegia, cerebral hemiplegia,
spastic hemiplegia, and spinal hemiplegia.

• Facial hemiplegia refers to paralysis affecting
  one side of the face.
• Cerebral hemiplegia occurs when a brain lesion
  disrupts blood flow within the brain.
• Spastic hemiplegia involves paralysis on one side
  of the body.
• Spinal hemiplegia results from lesions on the
  spine.

The most common cause of hemiplegia is a stroke,
which occurs when brain damage disrupts normal
blood supply. Perinatal strokes, which happen
within the first few days after birth, are a
leading cause of cerebral palsy in children,
often leading to movement limitations and other
challenges.

It occurs due to damage to the motor area on one
side of the brain, often resulting from
birth-related hypoxia or anoxia. The condition
more commonly affects the left side of the body.

The Signs And Symptoms Of
Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy
Hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy is
characterized by reduced use of one side of the
body, significant weakness in one upper limb
(primarily the hand), deformities in one lower
limb, and delays in developmental milestones,
including late walking. Epilepsy and other
associated medical conditions are less frequently
observed in this type.

Can Be Diagnosed
The diagnosis of hemiplegic spastic cerebral
palsy is primarily clinical and based on observed
signs and symptoms. In most cases, additional
tests are not necessary. However, an MRI may be
performed to determine the exact cause of the
condition.

Long Terms Outcomes And
Hemiplegic cerebral palsy has a better prognosis
than other types of cerebral palsy. With early
and appropriate physiotherapy, most children can
achieve independence and lead a normal life.
