Title: The relationship between preparation and performance in public speaking

1
The relationship between preparation and
performance in public speaking
Figure Name- Public Speaking
In a study conducted on public speaking, a
total of 119 students were recorded while
delivering speeches in public. During the
survey, they filled out questionnaires
concerning preparation time, past speaking
experience, anxiety about the speech just
given, general anxiety about communication,
and grade point average. Researchers compared
the questionnaire responses with ratings of
the content and delivery of the speeches.
Grade point average, total preparation time,
time spent preparing a visual aid, number
of prepared speeches in an audience, silent
rehearsal, public rehearsal, research
outside the library, preparation of speaking
notes, and the total amount of time were
all factors positively associated with speech
performance. It was found that performance
anxiety negatively correlates with the
quality of speech delivered. A mixed
relationship exists between public speaking
quality and experience with public speaking
instruction. The degree of preparation for a
speech, the number of preparation rehearsals,
and the state of anxiety experienced by the
speaker were significant predictors of the
quality of the speech. Being prepared is
imperative if you want to give an excellent
speech. According to various authors, there is
a tale attributed to different public
speakers stating that if I have to speak
for ten minutes, I need a week if fifteen
minutes, three if thirty minutes, two days if
an hour, I am ready now.
2
There was a lot of truth in there, too,
regardless of how humorous it was. Whenever
giving a speech, public speakers must think
long and hard about their message. Then
they have to consider why their audiences
should care about what they say. Preparation is
necessary for public speaking. Preparation is
hard work and takes time and effort. Any time
you watch a great speech or presentation, you
can bet that much time was spent on
preparation, no matter how long the speech
or presentation was. It takes time,
effort, and commitment to be an effective
public speaker. You run the risk of
underperforming and disappointing your
audience if you don't put in the effort
beforehand. It is important to prepare in
advance. Otherwise, you might fail as a public
speaker. When it comes to public speaking,
many people fail to prepare properly. By
far, preparing for public speaking is the
biggest obstacle, the most tedious and difficult
part of the journey towards becoming great at
speaking and presenting. However, it's also the
most critical component of the process, so you
cannot afford to overlook it.
  • Simple schedule to prepare for public speaking
  • You can follow this simple schedule to prepare
    for public speaking
  • Throughout one month, gather data, organize, and
prepare for rehearsal in the first week.
  • Start saying parts of your speech out loud.
Keep your tongue in tune with how the words
feel as they go off your tongue. When you
encounter a word or phrase that does not feel
    right, change it.
  • Say the entire phrase once every day when
you have two weeks remaining. You might want
to start in the middle and work toward the end
first because the middle tends to get neglected.
  • The week prior, say your speech aloud out loud
twice daily every day, starting at the beginning.
  • Tips for preparing your speech
  • Some points you should remember while preparing
    and delivering your speech
  • Who is your audience?
  • Why are you delivering a speech to them?
  • What elements do you need to incorporate in your
speech to grab your audiences' attention?
  • How should you start your speech?

3
  1. How should you organize the body of your speech?
  2. How do you edit my speech?
  3. How should you conclude your speech?
  • Steps to make preparation and practice
  • Following are some steps you can take to make
preparation and practice as undemanding as
    possible
  • You should start preparing as soon as you
get an assignment to speak or present. You
should work backward from the date of your
speech. If you are close to your goal, your
preparation time has to be more concentrated.
    Start collecting information right away
    facts, figures, stories, statistics, press
reports, and everything else you think might
be required. Write down or record every
thought that comes into your head because
it could disappear just as quickly. The
    editing can be done later.
  • You need to organize your thoughts first. The
main message should be at the top. You then need
to list your key messages along with
supporting points and data. There should be
a rhythm to your talk, so incorporate the
stories, stats, and humor you gathered
during step 1 into your presentation.
  • There is no substitute for practicing.
Speakers, who are at their best, practice
their speeches beforehand. This means that you
need to say it out loud before the gig and
not just mouth it on the airplane, train, or car
    on the way there.
  • Make sure you practice more than you
expect to. In addition, as you gain
experience, your practice will get easier, and
the time you allocate to it will decrease.
  • Make use of feedback tools. Work on your
skills in front of mirrors, audio/video
recorders, and even in front of a small
group of trusted colleagues. Although such
tools may not always be needed, as your
presentation skills improve, you can utilize
them to see yourself as the other person
sees you, another crucial strategy in improving
    your presentation skills.
  • There are lots of interesting things that can
come from practicing or rehearsing. It is
important to practice speaking it out loud. It
lets you hear what you are saying and exposes
you to different and better ways of saying
what you are saying. With this method, you
can learn without memorization. Stage fright
can be overcome with practice by speaking out
    loud.
