Ancient Histria or Istros (Thracian river god,
Danube), was a Greek colony (or polis) on the
Black Sea coast, established by Milesian settlers
to trade with the native Getae.

The Histria Museum, founded in 1982, exhibits
some of these finds. The excavation project and

Scymnus of Chios (c. 110 BC), the Greek
geographer and poet, dated it to 630 BC. Eusebius
of Caesarea, some centuries later, dated its
founding to 657 656 BC, at the time of the 33rd
Olympic Games.

The earliest documented currency on Romanian
territory was an 8-gram silver drachma, issued in
Histria in the year 480 BC.

The Hellenistic period was ended by Marcus
Antonius who was in charge of the eastern Roman
government, and was defeated by Octavian at
Actium. Around 30 AD, Histria became a Roman town

During the Roman period from the 1st to 3rd
centuries AD, temples were built for the Roman
gods, besides a public bath and houses for the
wealthy. Altogether, it was in continuous
existence for some 12 centuries, starting with
the Archaic Greek period up to the
Roman-Byzantine period

The ruins of the settlement were first identified
in 1868 by French archaeologist Ernest

The Enisala Fortress (often referred to as
Heracleea Fortress) is a 12th to 14th century
medieval fortress sitting high on a hill
overlooking Lake Razim (Razelm) and a vast field
of reed grass and water channels, in Tulcea
County. Histria is nearby with seven millennia
of civilizations layered onto one site - as are
other ancient sites

The Danube Delta is the second largest river
delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is
the best preserved on the continent. The greater
part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania (Tulcea
county), while its northern part, on the left
bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in Ukraine
(Odessa Oblast).

The waters of the Danube, which flow into the
Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of
Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300
species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish
species in its numerous lakes and marshes

The Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a
member of the grebe family of water birds

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve has the
third largest biodiversity in the world (over
5,500 flora and fauna species), exceeded only by
the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the
Galapagos Archipelago in Ecuador. A total area
of 679,000 ha of the delta is under legal
protection including floodplains and marine
areas. The core of the reserve (312,400 ha) was
designated as a World Natural Heritage Site in
1991

About 3600 feral horses live in the Danube Delta,
2000 in the Letea nature reserve, where on one
hand, they are among the last remaining "wild"
(feral) horses living at large on the European
continent, but are also deemed to be a threat to
the flora of the forest, including to some plants
on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

2000 years ago, Saint Andrew preached
Christianity in the south of Dobrudja, together
with his disciples. At some point, four of his
disciples were stoned to death four stone
crosses stand today in the place of their
martyrdom.

Along centuries, the crosses proved to be endowed
with curind power addressing both corporal and
mental diseases.

A Healing Spring is in the nut-tree orchard of
the monastery. According to the legend, it is
owed to St. Andrew who passed by the spot of the
present-day monastery, and prayed for water,
since he and his companions were thirsty. When he
thrust his staff into the ground, water would
spring up, and they say that those who drink or
sprinkle it over theirs bodies in good faith are
protected against evil and disease.

The Mircea is a three masted barque, built in
1938 in Hamburg by the Blohm Voss shipyard as a
training vessel for the Romanian Navy. Her
design is based on the successful plans of the
Gorch Fock. The ship is named after the
Wallachian Prince Mircea the Elder Overall
length 82,1 m Width 12 m Height 42 m

The Treasure of Agighiol National History Museum
Bucharest Found in 1931 a tomb of a Dacian
prince not far form Histria (Dobruja). In the
outer chamber were found the skeletons of horses,
with the hammered silver plaques of their rich
harness. The inner chamber contained the entire
silver treasure of the prince himself. One of the
vases is inscribed "Cotys", prince's name. The
tomb and treasure are from 4th century BCE.
