The Great Barrier Reef is the largest
coral reef in the world. It is believed to be
about 600,000 years old. It stretches along the
coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia. It
is separated from the coast by a strait that is
160 kilometers wide and over 60 meters deep in
places. The length of the reef is over 2,000 km.
It also includes about 600 islands and islets. It
is one of the most biologically rich areas in the
world. There are about 400 species of coral. Each
has its own growth form, which creates a
significant diversity of the reef. The reef is
seriously threatened by the consequences of
environmental changes, especially the so-called
coral bleaching and the proliferation of thorny
starfish. About 70 of the Great Barrier Reef is
partly damaged. In 1981, UNESCO declared it a
world nature reserve.
La Gran Barrera de Coral es el arrecife de
coral más grande del mundo. Se cree que tiene
unos 600.000 años de antigüedad. Se extiende a lo
largo de la costa de Queensland, en el noreste de
Australia. Está separada de la costa por un
estrecho de 160 kilómetros de ancho y más de 60
metros de profundidad en algunos lugares. La
longitud del arrecife es de más de 2.000
kilómetros. También incluye unas 600 islas e
islotes. Es una de las zonas con mayor riqueza
biológica del mundo. Hay alrededor de 400
especies de coral. Cada una tiene su propia forma
de crecimiento, lo que crea una diversidad
significativa del arrecife. El arrecife está
seriamente amenazado por las consecuencias del
cambio climático, especialmente el llamado
blanqueamiento de los corales y la proliferación
de estrellas de mar espinosas. Aproximadamente el

koralový útes sveta. Predpokladá sa, že je starý
asi 600 000 rokov. Tiahne sa pozdlž pobrežia
Queenslandu v severovýchodnej Austrálii. Od
pobrežia je oddelený prielivom, ktorý je miestami
160 kilometrov široký a vyše 60 metrov hlboký.
Dlžka útesu je vyše 2000 km. Jeho súcastou je aj
okolo 600 ostrovov a ostrovcekov. Predstavuje
jednu z biologicky najbohatších oblastí sveta.
Vyskytuje sa tu okolo 400 druhov koralov. Každý
má svoj vlastný tvar rastu, cím vzniká znacná
rozmanitost útesu. Útes vážne ohrozujú dôsledky
environmentálnych zmien, najmä tzv. bielenie
koralov a premnoženie hviezdice trnistej.
Ciastocne je poškodených okolo 70 Velkej
koralovej bariéry. V roku 1981 ju UNESCO
vyhlásilo za svetovú prírodnú rezerváciu.
