Introduction
Heart transplantation surgery is a life-saving
treatment given when someone's heart cannot work
properly due to extensive disease or injury. It
is done by transplanting a patient's dying heart
with a donor's healthy heart, taken from someone
who has just died. Such surgery is usually the
last chance for patients having end-stage heart
failure, which results from coronary artery
disease, cardiomyopathy, or birth defects.

Heart Failure
Heart Failure is a term used when the heart
cannot get blood pumped fast enough to give the
body adequate oxygen and nutrient supply. It does
not necessarily mean that the heart has given out
completely but that it can't work well enough.
Right-Sided Heart Failure This happens when
the right side of the heart (which pumps
deoxygenated blood to the lungs) cant pump
efficiently. It often results in fluid buildup in
the legs, ankles, and abdomen.
Left-Sided Heart Failure This occurs when the
left side of the heart (which pumps oxygenated
blood to the body) is weakened. It leads to fluid
buildup in the lungs, causing shortness of
breath, especially during physical activity or
lying down.

Eligibility for Heart Transplant
A heart transplant is a lifesaving surgery done
when an individual's heart is seriously damaged
or diseased and cannot be treated with other
methods to restore heart function.
Age Restrictions Although there is no rigid age
cut-off, the majority of transplant centers use a
policy that patients less than 65 years are the
first choice candidates. Nevertheless, candidates
above the age of 65 years can also be considered
based on their 1. General health 2. Lack of
significant comorbidities 3. Surgical and
postoperative tolerance

The Heart Transplant Process
The heart transplant procedure starts with the
assessment of a patient's health and putting him
on a transplant list. The recipient is then
operated upon when a compatible donor heart is
sourced. After surgery, patients need intensive
care, immunosuppressive drugs to avoid rejection,
and constant monitoring. Recovery depends on
organ compatibility, the state of health, and
continued medical supervision to keep the new
heart functioning.

Challenges and Risks
1. Organ Rejection The immune system can reject
the new heart in spite of immunosuppressants. 2.
Infection Immunosuppressant medication raises
the risk of infection.
3. Limited Donor Availability There is a lack
of available donor hearts. 4. Surgical
Complications Bleeding, blood clots, or organ
failure during or after surgery.
5. Lifelong Medication Drugs are used
consistently, which results in side effects such
as cancer or damage to the kidneys. 6. Emotional
and Mental Health Stress, anxiety, or
depression may follow transplantation.

Conclusion
Heart transplant surgery is a life-saving
procedure for end-stage heart failure patients,
potentially providing the opportunity for greatly
enhanced quality of life and survival. Although
complications such as organ rejection, infection,
and lifelong medication are challenges, many
recipients live active, productive lives.
Improvement in medical technology and
post-operative care continues to enhance results.
With proper surveillance and dedication to
post-transplantation care, heart transplantation
is an important option for patients who have no
alternative treatment.
