Han Meilin was the first Chinese artist to
receive the Peace Artist title from UNESCO. In
2015, on October 15 at the UNESCO Headquarters,
he was named the UNESCO Artist For Peace. In
recognition of his long-term commitment to
promoting art and artistic education in China,
his support to providing quality education to
young people, notably through projects led by the
Han Meilin Art Foundation, and his dedication to
the ideals and aims of the Organization. He is a
prolific artist, known for his ink-wash
paintings, sculptures, porcelains and
calligraphy. He also designed the Fuwa, the
mascot of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Han
Meilin (simplified Chinese ???, born 1936 in
Jinan, Shandong) is also known to have lived
through hard times during the Cultural
Revolution. Han is also known to have been
tortured in the past. In a 2008 interview, Han
admitted his tendon was cut during the Cultural
Revolution. His thumbs became useless until later
repaired by doctors. In 1979, he was elected to
the China Artists Association. In 1980, he was in
the United States, holding art exhibitions in 21
cities including Boston and New York City. He was
given the key to the city of San Diego as an
honorary citizen and the city of Manhattan
declared October 1, 1980 as Han Meilin Day. In
1983 six of his work were printed on Christmas
cards issued by the United Nations. He also gave
lectures at Harvard University. He also designed
the pig postal stamps for China in 1983, panda
stamps for 1985 and the phoenix logo for Air
China. After the successful openings of two art
museums in Beijing and Hangzhou, Han Meilin
turned his attention to the foothills of the
Helan Mountain near Yinchuan. In 2010, Han
donated 1,000 pieces of his work to the Yinchuan
municipal government, and an art museum to house
the works was built.

20-meter-high theme sculpture. This is the
sculpture "Good Moon Flowing" created by Han
Meilin. It is also an artist's tribute to five
thousand years of Chinese civilization

In 2005, Mr. Han Meilin donated 1,000 of his
works to Hangzhou which has always been dear to
his heart. To house and exhibit this art, the
Peoples Government of Hangzhou built the
Hangzhou Han Meilin Art Gallery within Hangzhou
Botanical Garden beside West Lake. It is hoped
that this art gallery will integrate Mr. Han
Meilins splendid art into the culture of West
Lake, add new charm to the renowned historic and
cultural city and continuously spread Mr. Han
Meilins artistic spirit.
