RoMANIA
Breb
Judetul Maramures

In northern Romania, at the Ukrainian border,
lies the county of Maramures. Here, amidst
mountains, hills and depressions are one of the
most interesting tourism objects in the country,
yet very well kept. Here, people lead their lives
as authentically and peacefully as in the old
times.

denumit popular breb, popula aproape toate
râurile din România. Cauza dispari?iei acestor
    aprecia?i, re?eta care s-a pierdut ?i ea.
    Bra?ov.

Castor fiber, the Eurasian beaver or European
beaver (in Romanian language Breb) is a species
of beaver, which was once widespread in Eurasia,
where it was hunted to near extinction both for
fur and for castoreum, a secretion of its scent
gland believed to have medicinal properties.
Re-introduced through much of its former range,
it now occurs from the British Isles to China and
Mongolia. Breb is an old Romanian word for
Beaver. A long time ago, there where beavers here
making dams in the many streams that flow through
the village from the mountain.
5
Maramures is
not only a tourist attraction its the very
symbol of Romanian tradition and continuity.
Maramures is one of the few places in Romania
where traditions are still kept and respected, as
they were hundreds of years ago.
6
sarii. The village of Breb is a sleepy little
village of around 400 homes and depending on how
many men and women are working away or at school
in Cluj Napoca there can be up to 1,500 in the
village.
7
Sunatoarelor. The bottom of the village is
around 400 meters above sea level and the top is
around 550/600 meters

There are two churches, the Greco Catholic church
which is the 16th century church made of solid
oak next to the river and the Orthodox church
that dominates the skyline for miles around.

locului. Built in 1531, the Wooden Church Saint
Archangels is found in the old hearth of the
village called today "Copaceni" by the children
of Vasile, descendants of Prince Giulea, and the
village residents. The church is moved to the
current site donated by the wife of the noble
Boteanu, for which the place is called Boteneasa,
in 1626. It has suffered innumerable
transformations over time, but still keeps the
original elements specific to the medieval
architecture.

The small wooden church on the road to Hotini is
dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and
Gabriel. Chronology research has determined that
the church burnt down during the winter of
1621-1622. The church was probably rebuilt in
1622, now standing among the oldest preserved in
Maramures and Transylvania. The dating of some
pieces of the tower structure to have been cut in
the winter of 1529-1530, the only preserved
wooden tower from a 16th century wooden church
though out Maramures and Romania.
