In northern Romania, lies the county of
Maramures. Here, amidst mountains, hills and
depressions are one of the most interesting
tourism objects in the country, yet very well
kept. Here, people lead their lives as
authentically and peacefully as in the old times

Maramures covers 3381 sq km of valleys, beautiful
villages, hills and mountains (up to 2303 m
high). On this small surface are preserved over
100 wooden churches (8 of them listed on UNESCO
list), a natural reserve also protected by

the place where the time hasn't moved for
decades, and a place where the traditions, the
wooden art and the human kindness are well

• În Maramures se gasesc unele dintre cele mai
  interesante construc?ii religioase din lume.
  Bisericile de lemn maramure?ene au câ?tigat în
  timp un renume binemeritat atât între exper?i cât
  ?i pentru publicul mare din diferite ?ari din
  lume. Aceste biserici reprezinta, fara îndoiala,
  una dintre culmile artei în domeniul de
  construc?ii de lemn din Europa. Biserica de lemn
  din Bude?ti Josani, a fost inclusa pe lista
  patrimoniului mondial al UNESCO în decembrie 1999
• The church of Saint Nicholas in Budesti Josani
  ("Lower Budesti") is one of eight wooden churches
  of Maramures that UNESCO has listed as a World
  Heritage.

În interiorul bisericii se pastreaza camasa de
zale si coiful legendarului haiduc maramuresean
Pintea Viteazul, lasate în grija bisericii dupa
lupta cu tatarii din anul 1717. The church is
famous for objects that belonged to two 18th
century freedom fighters against the Austrian
Habsburgs the coat of mail of Pintea the Brave,
and the flag of Ferenc II Rákóczi, a
Transylvanian nobleman. There are also 15th-17th
century icons painted on wood and glass. It is
one of the eight churches on the UNESCO World
Heritage List.

Pictura interioara este alcatuita din scene
despar?ite prin dungi de culoare. Figurile sunt
desenate pentru a fi vazute de aproape ca în
miniaturile manuscriselor dupa care pictorul s-a
inspirat. Predomina culorile deschise, luminoase,
curate ?i armonizate. Întreg ansamblul ,,cânta ?i
cheama cu ochiul. Pictura interioara ?i o buna
parte din numeroasele icoane din biserica dateaza
din anul 1762, când a activat aici Alexandru
Ponehalschi. Conform unei inscrip?ii în anul
men?ionat s-a pictat un mare numar de icoane, ce
formeaza actuala tâmpla de pe peretele estic al
naosului The interior walls of the church are
painted with small scenes, almost miniature-like,
framed with coloured bands. In 1762, one of the
most famous painters of icons and churches,
Alexandru Ponehalschi, painted the pronaos, the
naos and the iconostasis, as well as several
icons. Ponehalschi was active in the area, and
besides this church, painted also the churches of
Budesti Susani, Calinesti Caieni, Ieud Deal and
Sârbi Susani. Ioan Opris painted the chancel in
1832 in the baroque style, as specified in an
inscription found on an icon in the chancel. The
first paintings are painted on pieces of textile
applied on the walls and covered with a
preparatory layer of limewash. The 19th century
paintings are painted directly on wood.
