  • Nestled in the heart of Tabuk City, in
    northwestern Saudi Arabia, the Tabuk
Archaeological Castle stands as a testament to
the region's rich history and strategic
significance. Constructed in 1559 during the
reign of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent,
this fortress was originally built to safeguard
the water station of Ain al-Sukkar and to serve
as a pivotal stop on the Levant-Medina Hajj
route, facilitating the passage of pilgrims from
    the Levant to Medina.

  • The castle's design reflects the architectural
prowess of the Ottoman era. It comprises two
floors centered around an open courtyard,
encircled by domed rooms. The ground floor houses
a mosque, a well, and several rooms, while the
upper floor features an open-air summer mosque
    and additional rooms.

  • Over the centuries, the castle underwent several
renovations to maintain its structural integrity
and relevance. Notably, it was restored in 1653,
1844, and again in 1950. In 1993, the General
Authority for Tourism and National Heritage
    undertook a comprehensive restoration,
transforming the site into the Tabuk
Archaeological Castle Museum. This museum now
showcases a plethora of artifacts, including
    Islamic inscriptions, Nabatean relics, and
    prehistoric sculptures, offering visitors a
glimpse into the region's diverse cultural
    heritage .

  • Adjacent to the castle lies the royal pools,
remnants of the ancient water system that once
served the fortress. These pools, one square and
the other rectangular, are fed by the nearby Ain
al-Sukkar spring and further underscore the
castle's role in water management and its
strategic importance in the arid landscape .?

  • Today, the Tabuk Archaeological Castle stands not
only as a historical monument but also as a
symbol of the region's enduring legacy. Its
preservation and transformation into a museum
    highlight Saudi Arabia's commitment to
safeguarding its cultural heritage and providing
insight into the civilizations that have shaped
its history. For those interested in exploring
the depths of Saudi Arabia's past, a visit to the
Tabuk Archaeological Castle offers an enriching
experience, bridging the ancient with the present.
