E-CONTENT NEED OF THE HOUR
Dr. Usha Kumar Research Scientist EDUCATIONAL
MULTIMEDIA RESEARCH CENTRE IIT CAMPUS ROORKEE
2
CLASSROOM IS AN EFFECTIVE NAME FOR LEARNING TO
TAKE PLACE BECAUSE OF ITS FLEXIBILITY
  • Students can work individually
  • or in a group
  • Sharing of information in lecture
  • or in a discussion
  • Learning both from teacher and each other
  • Learning tools can be introduced or removed as
    needed

3
E-LEARNING a technological advancement in
education changed the paradigm from
Chalk Talk
Click and learn
new tool of education i.e. E-Content
4
E-Content
New form of packaging knowledge in electronic
format
Web casting the same for the use of learners
worldwide
access is simple
by surfing net
Purchasing the CD/DVDs on the topics needed by
learners
5
FORMAT OF E-CONTENT

LEARNING THROUGH E-CONTENT
Learners managed
invitational
Assessment at the request of learner
Making learning
Personalised
I did it my way
7
E-content learning is asynchronous
(flexible) because one can learn
  • any time
  • any age
  • any one
  • any place
  • any path way
  • any pace

8
Advantages of Asynchronous learning over
synchronous (real time learning)
  • Flexibility any time (24 hrs of the day and 7
    days a week)
  • Time to reflect rather than having to react on
ones feet it allows the learner to think over
ideas, check references and take any amount of
    time to prepare comment.
  • 3. Cost effective technology text based
asynchronous system requires little bandwidth and
low end computers to operate thus access
particularly global access is more equable.

9
Successful learning through asynchronous combines
3 elements
  • Personalised learning programme
  • Good learning experience
  • Increase retention

10
Content Packaging / Knowledge Packaging a
painstaking exercise
Requires Lot of training for designers
Educational Psychology
Educational Technology
Educational Sociology
So that suitable contents can be prepared for
learners having different learning styles and
different difficult level
11
STEPS OF CONTENT PACKAGING
1. Identify Knowledge It involves identifying
specific topics and then finding the knowledge
that fits in those topics. 2. Ways to assemble
that knowledge include conducting new
research. 3. Segment audience Identify the
targeted recipients for the knowledge and sort
them into groups. 4. Customize content select
the relevant information from the knowledge base
(books, reports) and tailor it for each segment.
Be sure to provide appropriate level of detail
for each audience. 5. Choose an appropriate
format Recipients preferred methods of learning
should be taken into account when choosing a
format. 6. Organize Content Quick and
meaningful navigation save time, avoid
frustration and encourage frequent use. 7. Market
test format and content The content should be
tested and revised based on the reaction of a
sample of end users. Ask for specific suggestions
for improving it.
12
E-CONTENT COURSE SHOULD BE BASED ON
  • Learning objective
  • Entry knowledge of Learner
  • Skills
  • preferences

13
The new e-learning technologies certainly offer
us the rich promise and potential of formal /
informal learning, delivery at any time,
anywhere, on any topic, international courses,
fully inter cultural, with learners-teachers
drawn from all over the world. This is really
exciting one.
14
BUT WHAT RESEARCH SAYS (based on research survey
conducted by EM2Rc Roorkee in past ten years)
  • The motivation level of the majorityof the
students was found low due to -
  • poor income background of majority of the
    students
  • poor learning environment
  • low interest in subject matter
  • poor self study skills

15
RECENT FEEDBACK DATA COLLECTION (2005)
  • students were found very well aware about
    computers and internet facility
  • it was surprising to note that out of 400
students 96 of the students never used computer
and internet facility for any purpose. What to
talk about education. The reason told by them was
    Computer is in English.
  • This scenario is entirely different in urban
areas due to lot of exposures of the students to
    new communication technologies in education.

16
HURDLES IN MAKING THIS PROJECT A SUCCESS AND
SUSTAINABLE
  • Non-availability of technology to majority of
    students
  • Lack of necessary e-skills
  • Technofobia among students
  • Old computers having slow internet speed might
prove frustrating learning situations for the
    students.
  • Poor learning environment?
  • Language problem
  • Low motivation among students for learning

17
Despite all these disadvantages if
e-content/e-learning is fit in its task, it will
surely survive in Darwinian term.
18
Innovation in educational technology has opened a
new era before the learners. Now it is up to them
how efficiently they utilize learning resources
and equipped them selves to face the new
challenges and keep pace with newer knowledge of
the space age. What was scientific fantasy
yesterday is fast becoming a reality today.
