Title: Monerans, Protista, Viruses

1
Monerans, Protista, Viruses
2
Kingdom Protista
  • Characteristics
  • All Lack Tissues
  • Live in Wet Environments
  • Are Eukaryotic Cells
  • Most are unicellular or colonial
  • Grouped on the way they get food

3
Protozoans
  • Animal Like
  • Heterotrophs, at the bottom of the food pyramid
  • Classified on how they move
  • Pseudopods (Amoeba)
  • Ciliaphiora (Paramecium)
  • Zooflagellates - Non-motile
  • Sporozoans - Nonmotile

4
Pseudopods (Ameoba)
  • Move using pseudopods - extensions of the
    cytoplasm
  • example Ameoba

5
Ciliaphiora
  • Move using cilia - tiny hair-like extensions
  • example Paramecium

6
Zooflagellates
  • Move using flagella - whip-like long projections
  • May be present singly, in pairs, or in triplets

7
Sporozoans
  • Non-motile and parasitic
  • May cause disease

8
Plant-Like (Algae)
  • Are autotrophs, they perform photosynthesis to
    make food
  • Can be unicellular, multicellular, or colonial
  • Lack cell walls - need water for support
  • Primary - at the bottom of the food pyramid
    producers

9
Algae Examples
  • Dinoflagellates - unicellular w/ 2 flagella
  • Diatoms - unicellular, glass-like, non-motile
  • Euglena - flagella, planimal, make its own food
    or eat other organisms
  • Multicellular algae - leaf-like, can be seen with
the eye, internal structure different from plants

10
Fungus-like Protist
  • Are decomposers
  • Cell wall contains Chitin
  • Two types - Slime Molds Water Molds

11
Kingdom Monera
  • Main organisms of this group are bacteria
  • Prokaryotic Cells
  • Characteristics
  • Do not have a nucleus or membrane bound
    organelles
  • Have a cell membrane
  • Have ribosomes
  • Single celled organisms

12
Monerans
  • There are Heterotrophs Autotrophs
  • Oxygen Needs
  • Obligate Aerobes - need oxygen
  • Obligate Anaerobes - do not need oxygen
  • Facultative Aerobes - can live with or without
    oxygen

13
Monerans
  • Bacteria can be helpful or harmful
  • Reproduction
  • Sexually - Conjunction, involves 2 bacteria that
    exchange genetic material
  • Asexually - Binary Fission, cell divides into 2
    cells

14
Monerans
15
Viruses
  • A virus is a nucleic acid surrounded by a protein
    coat
  • A virus is not living
  • They are not made of cells
  • They can only reproduce in living cells

16
Viruses
  • Viruses have different shapes and appearances

17
Reproduction
  • Lysogenic Cycle

18
Reproduction
  • Lytic Cycle
