WETLANDS
  • Just what are wetlands?

14
WETLANDS - Definitions
  • NRCS - Swampbuster Provisions Areas
that have a predominance of hydric soils and that
are inundated or saturated by surface or ground
water at a frequency and duration sufficient to
support, and under normal circumstances do
support, a prevalence of hydrophytic vegetation
typically adapted for life in satuarated soil
    conditions, except lands in Alaska...

15
WETLANDS - Definitions
  • ACE/EPA- Section 404 Clean Water Act Areas that
are inundated or saturated by surface or ground
water at a frequency and duration sufficient to
support, and that under normal circumstances do
support, a prevalence of vegetation typically
adapted for life in saturated soil conditions.

16
WETLANDS - Definitions
  • US Fish and Wildlife Service 1979 Cowardin
Classification Of Wetlands and Deep Water
    Habitat
  • Lands transitional between terrestrial and
aquatic systems where the water table is usually
at or near the surface, or the land is covered by
    shallow water.

17
WETLANDS - Definitions
  • FWS 1979 Cowardin Classification(cont) . For
purposes of classification wetlands must have one
or more of the following three attributes
  • 1) At least periodically, the lands support
    predominantlyhydrophytes 2)The substrate is
predominantly undrained hydric soil 3) The
substrate is non-soil and is saturated with water
or covered by shallow water at some time of the
    growing season each year.

  • Estuarine
  • Riverine
  • Lacustrine
