• More than 165 million people in Europe live below
  the poverty line.

• 18 million children in this region are living on
  less than 2.15 (1.50) a day.

• More children are living in poverty in Eastern
  Europe and the former Soviet Union today than
  when the Berlin Wall fell.

• In 1998 Asia accounted for about two-thirds of
  the worlds 1.2 billion poorest people.

• Nearly half of Asias 1.27 billion children live
  in poverty deprived of food, safe drinking
  water, health and shelter.

• poverty and ignorance are forcing more than half
  the number of children out of schools.

...In the lands of Africa...

• In sub-Saharan Africa, measles takes the life of
  a child nearly every minute of every day. An
  effective measles vaccine costs as little as 1
  per child.

• One in six African children dies before the age
  of five. Most of these deaths could be prevented.

• Only 57 of African children are enrolled in
  primary education, and one in three of those does
  not complete school.

• Each night, 7,000 families -- with nearly 14,000
  children -- sleep in a city shelter.

What's being done to fight poverty?

• Organizations like the Red Cross and UNICEF are
  fighting for Childrens Rights and helping to
  feed the poor.

• People are taking a stand against poverty and are
  showing awareness to the issue.

• Children are being educated on poverty so, in
  future generations we will see a decrease.

• The men and women of the military are serving in
  other countries to help create better living
  conditions for the people.

• People are volunteering for local food drives,
  clothing drives, homeless shelters, toy drives,
  and donating money to those in need.
