Minoans

• Lived in Crete, a small island in the
  Mediterranean, from about 2,000BC to 1,400 BC
• Named after King Minos who owned a half man half
  bull monster called a minotaur
• Volcanic eruptions weakened the civilization and
  led to it collapse

Phoenicians

• Most powerful civilization once the Minoans fell,
  but they never united to form a country.
• Extraordinary shipbuilders and sailors
• City-States Sidon and Tyre made red-purple dye
  (60,000 snails made one lb), Byblos traded
  papyrus.
• Greatest colony was Carthage
