Anton van Leeuwenhoek

• Invented in 1665
• Started out making magnifying glasses to count
  the threads in cloth
• Single-lensed, as opposed to have an eyepiece and
  objective lens, as in more modern microscopes.
• Although compound microscopes (with two
  lenses),more similar to modern microscopes, had
  been invented in around 1595, they were only
  capable of about 20x magnification compared to
  Leeuwenhoeks 200x magnification.
• Whole microscope is approximately 4 inches long,
  and requires good lighting.
• In order to use the microscope correctly, the
  lens had to be nearly touching the eye.

Robert Hooke

• Hookes microscope was compound, using three
  lenses.
• An eyecup was fitted so that the optimum distance
  between the eye and the eyepiece lens is kept.
• Hooke combated the problem of dark specimen by
  using an oil lamp and passing the light through a
  water-filled glass, diffusing the light and
  illuminating the samples.
• Although a lot more complex and similar to the
  modern microscope, the simpler, single-lens
  microscope designed by van Leeuwenhoek proved to
  produce a clearer and more close-up image.
