WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

• Legislative Mandate
• NATIONAL WATER ACT (No. 36 of 1998)
• DWAF must ensure that S. A.s water resources are
  protected, used, developed, conserved, managed
  and controlled in a sustainable and equitable
  manner, for the benefit of all persons
• DWAF is public trustee of the Nations water
  resources, with power to regulate the use, flow
  and control of all water in the Republic
• ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION ACT (No. 73 of 1989
• S. 20)
• Mandates DWAF to issue permits for the
  establishment and or operation of waste disposal
  sites
• Amendment Bill will transfer this function to
  DEAT

• Promote a common vision for integrated water
  resource management (IWRM), and empower users to
  apply best practices
• Ensure the protection of water resources
• Ensure reliable and equitable supply of water for
  sustainable socio-economic development, including

Forestry

• Mandate
• NATIONAL FORESTRY ACT (No. 84 of 1998)
• To ensure that S.A.s forests (indigenous and
  plantation) are protected, used, developed,
  conserved, managed and controlled in a
  sustainable and equitable manner,
• Concurrent competence between National and
  Provincial Govts.
• NATIONAL VELD FORESTRY ACT (No. 101 of 1998)
• To prevent and combat veld, forest and mountain
  fires
• Provides for cooperative fire management
  institutions (FPAs)
• DWAF to prepare and maintain a fire danger rating
  system for the country with affected role players
  DPLG, Prov Govts, FPAs etc

  plantation forestry for equitable rural

• Addressing the 2nd economy
• In terms of Water Services, there are millions of
  people who do not have access to safe drinking
  water and adequate sanitation. Through the
  development of new infrastructure and improved
  management of water resources we are continuing
  to make a meaningful difference to the livelihood
  and quality of life to those people. A supply of
  secure and safe potable water can help fight off
  disease, bring basic dignity to people and
  contribute to eradicating some of the hardships
  of poverty.
• Ten years on, 10million more people now have
  access to basic water services, while the backlog
  in sanitation has been reduced to 17million

• We are working towards ensuring that in the next
  5 years, all households would have easy access to
  clean running water and that by year 2010, our
  sanitation backlog is eradicated.

• Embark on a SMS Imbizo (Road-shows) deploying SMS
  members to various rural areas i.t.o. WS and
  Sanitation
• Unveil Name Tags during the Batho-Pele week
• Develop and launch the Service Delivery Charter
• Review service standards for the next 5 years.
