How physics has helped me wade through the
administrative swamps of academia
James C. Garland President Physics
Professor Miami University
Abstract An old zen saying captures the
essence of being a university president "There
is no solution. Seek it lovingly." Universities
are fractious communities filled with smart,
strong-willed people who frequently disagree on
both matters of principle and practice. Problems
in academia can be horrendously complicated and
seldom have unique solutions or, worse, no
solution at all. This talk will explore how my
physics education prepared me for these
challenges, and how physics is, I am persuaded,
perhaps the best training one can have in
learning to manage complex organizations.
