PHYSICS IN SCHOOL ARCHITECTURE (PHYSARCH)Entangli
ng school architecture and physics educationby
mapping nature around, onto and into school
buildingsMaking physics part of a school as a
3-dimensional textbook
  • PHYSARCH Working Group

3
OBJECTIVES
  • To promote and develop the idea of
    implementing physical principles, laws and
phenomena into school architecture with the aim
    to
  • make physics more appealing to young people
    and students,
  • contribute to the development of curiosity
    in students,
  • create school environment that is
interactive and dynamic and enhances learning of
    physics,
  • afford physical experiences that direct
    and inspire a future scientist.
  • To connect PHYSARCH idea and principles
    with modern tendencies in educational
    architecture.
  • To renovate and build schools and school
courtyards using designs which take into account
principles of PHYSARCH and modern tendencies in
    school architecture.

4
GUIDELINES for DEVELOPMENT of PHYSARCH

Great Schools by Design The American
Architectural Foundation Launches National
Initiative
  • March 3, 2004 Washington, D.C. A major
initiative aimed at transforming the way
America's public schools are planned and designed
was announced here today by the American
Architectural Foundation (AAF) at the annual
    Accent on Architecture Gala.
  • Great Schools by Design is a national initiative
developed by the AAF in response to the
challenges communities face because of the
deteriorating condition of public schools and the
need to build new schools. More than 55 million
Americans, one fifth of the population, spend
their days in our nation's elementary and
secondary school buildings, many of which are in
    disrepair..
  • Late spring and summer forums are being planned
with school superintendents, teachers and other
stakeholders. The forums will provide the
background for a major national summit on school
design to be held in 2005.

9
Collection of examples. Collecting examples of
educational aids and devices for demonstration of
basic physical phenomena and laws, which are
suitable to be incorporated into school building.
Physicists teachers, professors and scientists
are invited to participate in collecting those
examples. The methods of teaching using those
devices in the school building should be
described, too.
  • At some point a Collection of Physarch
examples, design ideas and case studies be
published as a book. It will contain drawings
and photos of prototype models and designs,
    accompanied with explanations and didactic
    instructions.

10
Prototype models. Producing the prototype
models of examples from the Collection of
examples by producers of educational equipment.
  • Existing models in Science museums will be
    taken into account, too.

Design. Physarch is ideal for achieving and
realizing goals promoted and advocated by the
Innovative Forum for Innovative School
Design-DesingShare, by American Architectural
Foundation and other associations of architects.
Architects whose aim is to make school a
3-dimensional text book. are invited to use
the examples and models from Physarch.

23
Educational legislatures
  • State educational legislatures, local
communities and school authorities are invited
to formulate guidelines and sets of rules to
advance goals and principles of PHYSARCH. These
principles should be incorporated into the
    educational legislature. These principles should
be also promoted among scientific authorities,
    successful businessmen and potential investors.

24
Physarch workshop
  • will be organized in. Participants will be
    physicist, architects, local authorities, state
educational legislatures and others who took part
in Physarch project. They will present and
analyse their contributions to various parts of
the project and make plans for future work.
  • The place and time of the Workshop will be
announced by the end of 2004.
