7Laurentians Mining Leadership Team
- Senate and Board of Laurentian University adopted
a vision related to mining - Laurentian University will become the national
centre of excellence in mining innovation -
education, research, technology, and
commercialization - by energetically building on
acknowledged strengths in mineral exploration,
mining engineering, robotics, and environmental
sciences - No other Canadian university has a vision
statement explicitly directed in support of
mining - Mining Leadership Team (MLT) was established to
assist in implementing this vision - to provide leadership in support of mining
cluster initiatives being pursued at both the
regional and provincial level - to pursue mining research excellence on a wide
front - to make things happen supporting many
mutually complementary initiatives
8What is a Centre in Mining Excellence?
- Northern Ontario (Sudbury) is a Centre of Mining
Excellence - Excellence in exploration geoscience
- Excellence in mining
- Excellence in mining equipment-telerobotics.
automation - Excellence in environmental stewardship -
reclamation, monitoring - Excellence in innovation and commercialization of
products and services - Excellence in Supplies and Services
- Excellence in Mining Research supporting the
entire spectrum of activities - Opportunity for Northern Ontario, Sudbury and
Laurentian University to take a leadership role
in establishing a Centre in Mining Research
Excellence, the backbone of a Mining Cluster and
Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (OMICC
concept)
9Mining Research Spectrum
10The foundation is in placeMining Research Chairs
11Road Map to Mining excellence - Foundation
- Mining Future for Northern Ontario, the
Province and Canada - Sudbury One of the World's Leading Mining
Districts - Mining Research A Cornerstone for Ontario
Mining Cluster - Critical mass, expertise, knowledge, HQP,
- Building the Foundation Strength and Excellence
- Education
- M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Earth Sciences and
Engineering, and more pending - Research

- Capacity - 6 Mining research centres
- Funding - Healthy research funding stream of
gt3M/yr - Network - National and international
collaboration - Technology - Geosciences, robotics, VR,
monitoring - Commercialization services, software, hardware
12Why does Canada need a Centre in Mining Research
Excellence?
- The Mining Industry faces serious challenges that
jeopardize its sustainability and growth - Continuous supply of HQP (manpower)
- Discovery of new resources at depth within mines
and outside of existing operations - Cost efficient and safe mining methods/equipment
to pursue deposits at depth - Environmental stewardship
- ? Development of new knowledge and technology to
aid discovery, production, processing and
reclamation -
13Why does Canada need a Centre in Mining Research
Excellence?
- The solution to these and other problems will
require - Close collaboration between industry, government
and universities that is focused and led by
experts who have a profound understanding of the
industry - The leadership must emerge from specific centres
of research excellence that have the capability
to effectively address minings research and
educational challenges across the spectrum of
exploration, mining, metallurgy and reclamation - There are no university-based, federally or
provincially sponsored Centres in Mining Research
Excellence designed to meet the research and
educational needs of the Mining industry - ? The visionaries of Laurentian University have
steadily built the foundation to provide solution
teams
14The N.O. Advantage
- Sudbury is the largest mining district in the
world - Known and potential reserves indicate Sudbury
will be a mining powerhouse for the next 50 years - Vibrant major and junior mining exploration
sector - gt300 SMEs in minerals supply and service
industry - One-day drive from other major mining camps and
12 universities that conduct mining-related
research - Northern Ontario is a centre of Mining
Excellence, and Sudbury is at its centre - OMICC
initiative to develop Mining Cluster in Sudbury - ? Laurentian University provides Northern Ontario
with a worldwide strategic advantage
15Building on the Laurentian Advantage
- The Way Forward fuse the strengths of LUs
Mining Research Centres and supporting
Departments,and through collaboration with other
Ontario and Canadian researches, establish an
integrated, cross-disciplinary collaborative
Centre in Mining Research excellence that would
have the capability and mandate to achieve
excellence, and to address Industrys educational
and research problems across the spectrum from
exploration to reclamation.
16MLT Recommedation
- The MLT recommends that
- Laurentian University allocate human and
financial resources to expand leadership role and
to accelerate the development of mining
excellence (ICME) - Specifically that
- a MLT Secretariat be created and a Director
Mining Initiatives be appointed
17The Mandate of the MLT Director and Secretariat
promote aggressive growth, research excellence
and collaboration
- Way Forward Implement an aggressive growth
strategy - establish a Centre of Mining Research Excellence
- A knowledge pool to derive social and economic
benefits - Research, development and innovation
- Technology transfer and training (education
through RD) - Commercialization of knowledge and IP ? Mining
commercialization resource - An pool of industrial, academic, and public
sector collaborators - Collaborative innovation network taking data ?
