Title: Recap of Lecture
1Recap of Lecture 37 Materials Metallurgy
Metallurgy Taking materials from impure ore to
refined metal. Separate ore from gangue. Reduce
metal. Purify metal. Hydrometallurgy -- aqueous
chemistry. Electrometallurgy --
electrochemistry. Pyrometallurgy (still to
come) We saw a non-commerical example thermite!
2Recap of Lecture 38 Kinetics I
Kinetics Rate laws. Reaction order. Order and
stoichiometry are not the same. Clue to
mechanism. First order reaction Exponential
decay of reactants and growth of
products. Second order reaction Decay of
reactants and growth of products can be plotted
as inverse of concentration for graphical
assignment of order. Transition state Can
determine the fraction of the time that
reactants/products get to transition state
(analogue to equilibium) to determine
probability/rate of reaction vs. T and
concentration. Catalysis Lower transition state
energy stabilize transition state.
