Moon Facts
  • A planetlike satellite that revolves around the
    Earth
  • No Air or Liquid on the Moon
  • Temperature Range 100oC to -170oC
  • Moons gravity is 1/6th as strong as Earths
  • Diameter is less than the distance across the
    U.S.

3
Moon History
  • 1609 Galileo Galilei constructed his own
telescope and viewed the moon and its craters and
    marias for the first time.
  • Craters are formed from impacts of meteoroids and
    rocks from space.
  • Maria are dark flat areas. Galileo thought they
may have been oceans. Instead they were once
flooded with molten material billions of years
    ago.

Why do we see the Moon?
  • The Moon does not shine on its own. It is
    illuminated by the Sun.
  • Half of the moon is always in darkness and half
    is always in the sun

6
Motions of the Moon
  • 1 Moon Year 27.3 days to revolve around
    the Earth
  • 1 Moon Day 27.3 days to rotate on its axis
    one time

7
Sides of the Moon
movie
  • We only see the Near side of the Moon.
  • We can not view the Far side of the Moon from
    Earth.
  • Misunderstanding
  • There is no dark side of the moon. It gets
sunlight, we just can not view it from Earth.

8
Why do we only see the same side of the Moon?
Because the Moons rotation on its axis and its
revolution around the Earth is the same. We
always see the Near Side.
