2Behavior Matrices
Expectations Defined
- Once policies are developed, can use a format
called Student and Staff Matrices to assist with
teaching, implementing and reinforcing policies. - Matrices allow you to highlight Parts 23 of your
Common Area Policies and your SW
Expectationsaids in teaching and implementing. - All other parts of the policy are still in place
and still need to be implemented. - Matrices are Universal level practices for
teaching behavioral expectations in non-classroom
settings.

7Student Behavior Matrix
- SW Expectations are left hand column.
- Common Areas across top.
- Specific rules for each common area are listed
based on the written policy for that area. - Suggestion If possible, separate rules from
procedural requirements and only put rules on the
matrix. - Ex Use X door to enter the cafeteria
- is a procedural item.
- Ex Clean up after yourself is a rule.
8Student Behavior Matrix cont
- Should include both procedural items and rules
when teaching policies and matrices even if both
are not on the matrix. - May have to shorten statements on matrixaddress
with students when teaching. - Can add a Classroom column and teachers can
insert their own class rules, but they must be
specific and observable, not character traits.. - Once student matrix is completed, must do single
area matrices to put in that common area (Hallway
example on white). - Take a minute to look at these.
9Staff Expectations Matrix
flashdrive
- Rubrics/examples for Staff Expectations Matrices
for Elementary (lilac) and Secondary (gray). - SW Expectations not listed.
- Common Areas listed across top.
- Specific staff expectations as delineated in
policies are listed for each area. - Note Some staff expectations may not necessarily
be specific to a common area policy but may be a
part of the general expectations or procedures
for staff at that school ok to include those or
refer to them on your matrix. - Should refer staff to attached duty rosters or
any other appropriate documents that specify
staff supervision expectations.
10Student and Staff Matrices
Ideas for Use
- Student Matrices are used for teaching,
monitoring, and reinforcing student behavior.
Tip Do not laminate these! - Single Area Student Matrices should be developed
for each common area, laminated, and placed in
that common area. Useful as a quick reminder for
staff and students. - Student Matrix can be given to parents as part of
your PBS blitz. - Staff Matrix should be taught to and given to
staff as part of their PBS Orientation. Useful
as a quick reminder of procedures and
expectations for staff throughout the school.

- Have blank rubrics and our examples in folder
called Matrices single area example is noted as
Hallway. - Have examples developed by GCS schools on
goldenrod in this section. - Can add additional columns and rows if needed.
- On Student Behavior Matrix, can add Classroom as
a column and let teachers insert their classroom
rules. - Goal Complete your own behavior matrices for
both staff and student expectations for written
and completed policies after you have completed
SWExp and Parts 1-3 of Policies.
13 WORK TIME

Bathroom for each common area policy youve
developed. - Sections 4 5 of polices if not already
completed. - Tip Must complete 1 2 above before dividing
into smaller groups to complete 3-6
simultaneously if you do so, you must share and

partially develop now before you begin
implementing.
