Title: Standardized Concrete Sample Numbering System
1Standardized Concrete Sample Numbering System
- Florida Department of Transportation
- State Materials Office
- Mr. Donald Bagwell
- Ms. Susan Blazo
2Purpose
Develop a uniform numbering system for Lot
Numbers and Concrete Samples by utilizing the
Sample Numbering System the Sample No. Lot
No. Report
3Why a Numbering System
- To develop a standard numbering system for both
samples and lots - To ensure the concrete is verified per the
current specification - To reduce or eliminate spread sheets needed to
track current concrete sample and lot numbers - To identify Materials Certification issues and
concerns during the life of the project
4Implementation
- Use numbering system on NEW PROJECTS ONLY
- Dont renumber samples on ongoing projects where
a different numbering system is already being
used - Begin numbering samples in sequence starting with
0001

11Sample Numbering System Notes
- When design mix changes, the new sample numbering
sequence should begin with the number 1 except
when a mix design number that has already been
used on a project is reused
12Sample Numbering System Notes (cont.)
- When a mix design number is reused on a project,
pick up the sample number where you left off
13Sample Numbering System Notes (cont.)
- For example on a project you might
- Start with Mix 1 for 50 samples
- Switch to Mix 2 for 40 samples
- Switch back to Mix 1 for 49 more samples
14Sample Numbering System Notes (cont.)
- Mix 1 FDOT Sample numbers 0001- 0050
- Mix 2 FDOT Sample numbers 0001-0040
- Mix 1 FDOT Sample numbers 0051-0099
- The Sample No. Lot No. report will separate the
FDOT sample numbers based on the Mix Design
Numbers
15Sample Numbering System Notes (cont.)
- Sample Number characters may be either alpha or
numeric. - Samples for Precast/Prestressed Concrete may
begin with the alpha character P or B.
16Sample Numbering and LIMS Login
- Sample Numbering System and Sample No. Lot No.
Report work together - LIMS login information is critical to ensuring
the system works - FDOT Sample Number
- Lot Number
- Quantity Represented
17LIMS Log In Screen
18LIMS Login Details
- QC
- Enter new sample numbers in Sample No field
- Number lots sequentially in Lot No field
- Enter quantity represented for the lot in the
Quant Rep field - Examples 50 CY, 18 CY
- Choose the mix design from dropdown list
19LIMS Login Details
- V
- Enter new sample numbers in Sample No field
- V sample number should be the same sample number
as the QC sample it represents - Enter the QC lots the V sample represents in the
Lot No field - Example V represents QC lots 1 through 4 1-4
20LIMS Login Details
- V
- Enter quantity represented by the total quantity
the QC samples represent in Quant Rep - Examples 200 CY, 168 CY
- Choose the mix design from dropdown list
21LIMS Login Details
- IV
- Enter new sample numbers in Sample No field
- IV sample number should be the same sample number
as the QC sample it represents - Enter the QC Lot number the IV sample corresponds
to in the Lot No field - Enter QC Sample quantity the IV sample
corresponds to in the Quant Rep field - Choose the mix design from dropdown list
22LIMS Login Details
- IV (Cont.)
- Type in the QC Sample Number the IV sample
corresponds to in the Remarks field - For Example
- IV Sample represents QC Sample CP10001Q
23Sample Tracking
- Once the information is correctly entered in
LIMS, you can use it to track the status - Run Sample No. - Lot No. report to track samples
/ material status
24Sample Tracking
- Recommend running the report prior to each
placement or as deemed appropriate - Report will show if
- QC Samples verified/not verified by Design Mix
Number - Samples not tested
- Samples not entered in LIMS
25Sample No. - Lot No. Report
Log into LIMS

26No sample or QC sample number
Example of report with potential issues
No sample quantity
No QC Sample Number 1
No QC Sample Numbers 5 or 7
