SANBI primarily started as a Botanical Research
Institute and grew from there to encompass more.
Comprises three herbaria Compton Herbarium
KZN Herbarium National Herbarium

Species data is based on herbarium specimens
collected from 1564 up to present. Total number
of accessions - 926 971 and more.

In early 1980s it was envisioned that all
specimens in National Herbarium should be data
based electronically. National Herbarium (Pta)
was first herbarium in the world to be
electronically data based. PRECIS was born
(PREtoria Computerised Information System).
