Fate has been defined as that which is destined
or decreed, or pre-determined. That fits Lady
Macbeths meaning when she looks forward to the
return of her husband Lady Macbeth Hie thee
hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine
ear, And chastise with the valour of my
tongue All that impedes thee from the golden
round, Which fate and metaphysical aid doth
seem To have thee crownd withal. (I.v.24-29)

It is clear that there are powers of good and of
evil operating in the universe of Scotland.
Banquo calls the witches instruments of
darkness (I.iii.124) and Malcolm refers to the
powers above / who have put on their
instruments (IV.iii.238-239).
5
Clearly, it also refers to ones final
destinydeath. It is this meaning that Macbeth
refers to when he challenges fate to a joust
Come fate into the list, / And champion me to
th utterance! (III.i. 65-66, 70-72). It is also
his death he hopes to avert when he says to
Macduff that I will try the last (V.vii.61).
